Connecting to the Server

This page provides instructions for connecting to a website account on the Student Council Server. If you do not yet have a website account please visit the Request page. If you are not sure if you have an account, please email No Spam.

Access Permissions

In order to have access permissions for a website account on the Student Council Server, you must be listed as an officer (or member with technology responsibilities) within the @UVA System for the organization that owns the site.

See the links below for instructions on adding members or officers in @UVA. Please note that only the Primary Contact (e.g. President) or another officer with membership management access can follow the steps below.

Connecting with Secure FTP (SFTP)

To connect through SFTP, you must first download and install an SFTP Client such as FileZilla. For help with installation or trouble-shooting errors, please consult the FileZilla Wiki. FileZilla works on both Windows and Macintosh systems.
  1. Once you have installed FileZilla, locate and double-click the FileZilla icon on your Desktop or in the Start Menu.

  2. When the program has opened, locate the "Quick Connect" bar.

  3. Enter scs.student.virginia.edu in the "Host" box, your ESERVICES user ID the "Username" box, your ESERVICES password in the "Password" box, and 22 in the "Port" box.

  4. Click the "Quickconnect" button. FileZilla will remember your login information, so you won't have to enter it again.

  5. You should now see the contents of your hard drive in one pane, and the contents of the server in the other.

  6. For each organization you have access to you will see a .web folder and a .share folder. Website files are located in the .web folder and private group files in the .share folder. If you do not see any folders when you log in, please verify that the President of your organization has listed you as an officer in the @UVA .

  7. To update your website, download all web files to your local computer by dragging them from the server window on the right to the local computer window on the left.

  8. Open the files from the location you dragged them to with an HTML editor such as Microsoft Expression Web, Netscape Composer, or Macromedia Dreamweaver.

  9. When you save your edited files, you will need to drag them back from the local computer window in FileZilla to the server window. Be sure to drag them back into the folder you first copied them from (usually groupname.web/public_html/).

  10. To view your changes, simply open your website URL in an internet browser and surf to your page. You may need to hit the "Refresh" button if you already have the page loaded.
