Senior assistant captain Kevin Miller
netted a hat trick as UVa fell to North Carolina
State University on Friday night.
Miller played a strong game and was determined to put the puck in the
net. His determination resulted in the 1st hat trick of the year
for the Wahoos.
Adding 2 helpers were winger Doug Godfrin. Andrew Lehrman added
an assist on one of Miller's goals as well.
The game opened up with a moment of silence and a check presentation
for NCSU player Stephen Russell who died over the summer. The
Cavaliers donated to the Stephen Russell Foundation
"because we are a hockey family," coach Tony Fischer said.
Although the Hoo's played well at times, they could not keep State
off the score board. "It was not a 12-3 game," assistant coach Risto
Kerovouri said after the games. "It seemed to be a closer game than
the score shows," he added.
The Hoos travel to VT next Friday to face the Hookies at the Roanoke
Civic Center at 7:30 pm on Friday.

IMPORTANT TIME CHANGE - game beings at 8:30pm
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Men's Ice Hockey Team at the University of
Virginia announced today that it will make a donation to the Stephen
Russell Memorial. This donation will be recognized with a check
presentation and moment of silence during a pre-game ceremony before
their game against North Carolina State University on Friday,
November 13, 2009, at the Charlottesville Ice Park on the Downtown
Mall. The ceremony will begin at 8:30pm
(IMPORTANT TIME CHANGE).
The Stephen Russell Memorial was created in July 2009 to honor the
passing of North Carolina State University student-athlete Stephen
Russell, a goaltender on the NCSU Men's Ice Hockey Team.
The Memorial aims to carry forward his "positive approach to
life and hockey" during the annual Canes Cup, recently renamed the
Stephen Russell Memorial Tournament.
"Our players were really the impetus behind making this
contribution to Stephen's Memorial. It shows how close the collegiate
hockey community is and how much these players care about one another,"
said Virginia head coach Tony Fischer. "Our hearts are with the entire
NCSU Men's Ice Hockey Team during what must be a very difficult season."
Anyone who wants to participate in UVa's presentation or is interested
in donating to the foundation through UVA can contact coach Tony
Fischer at uvahockey@gmail.com by Thursday Nov. 12, 2009

Roger Voisenet and Paul Martin.
The team heads into this weekend tied for 2nd in the ACCHL and will
face rival Virginia Tech on Friday and Liberty University on Saturday.
Both teams usually draw large crowds here in Charlottesville and the
Cavaliers hope to have their own fans show up and cheer on the home team.

The Cavaliers beat the Duke Blue Devils 3-2 in a wild and wooly game
that ended in a sudden death shootout on Saturday night.
The Blue Devils led 1-0 after the 1st period. In the second period,
1st year defenseman Rob Borden went end to end and scored on his own
rebound to make the score 1-1 at the end of 2 periods.
In the 3rd period, Duke score in the first 2 minutes to make the score
2-1. The Cav’s found themselves in a familiar place, trailing in the
3rd period, but this time they responded.
Both teams had numerous chances during the period, and as he has done
all season, goalie Eric Bradnam made several spectacular saves to keep
the score 2-1.
Half way through the 3rd period the Hoo’s tied the game on a power
play goal from Ben Moser. With a face off deep in Duke’s end, center
Andrew Lehrman won the draw back to freshman Ben Moser who made no
mistake about it and fired a slap shot from the point that found its
way to the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.
The rest of the period saw both teams skate end to end and come close
to scoring the deciding goal, but neither team could win it in
regulation time.
In overtime, off the opening faceoff, the Hoo’s Doug Godfrin broke in
on a 2-2 with center Kevin Miller and barley missed the net that would
have sealed the win for Virginia. Both teams continued to pound the
puck at the other teams net but could not score a goal in OT.
The teams then went into a shootout. With the tension mounting
both goalies stopped the 1st 5 players to keep the score 2-2 heading
into sudden death shootout. The next two players for both teams did
not score. Duke then scored a goal in the top of the 7th round to
force Virginia to score or go home. Enter winger Joe Utzcategui,
with pressure on him to score or lose the game, Joe skates down the
ice with every Hoo fan in the building on their feet watching
Utzcategui put the puck in the back of the net. Forced with the
pressure of sudden death Utzcategui comes through with a game saving
goal. Goalie Eric Bradnam then stops the Blue Devils in the next 2 rounds.
In the bottom of the 10th round, out skates Joe Makhoul. Makhoul out
for the past 2 weeks with a wrist injury is tapped by coach Tony
Fischer to try and win the game for the Cavaliers. Makhoul skates down
the ice and puts the puck behind the Blue Devils goalie and into the
net. The team and crowd erupt as Makhoul skates up the side boards to
meet his team in a celebration that concludes a long, hard fought game.
The game was well played by both teams and was, by all accounts, a nail
bitter from the start to the end. It was very entertaining game and
ended on a high note for the Cavaliers with their first win in ACCHL
play this year.
The team takes on rivals Virginia Tech on Friday at the Ice Park and
hope to draw a big crowd to help support the team as the take on league
leading Hookies.

The hockey team lost both its games this weekend in ACCHL play.
They dropped 7-4 against UNC and 4-0 against Georgetown. The team
played well at times but could not hold off the opponents in its own end.
They were out shot each game and goalie Eric Brandnam came up with some
good saves in the Georgetown game to keep the score close.
Andrew Sufka and James Eysenbach were given the games pucks for their
effort this weekend.
Head coach Tony Fischer "sees times when we play very good and other
times when we just give the puck away". "We need to do a better job in
the individual battles and holding on to the puck, we give it away
likes a hot potato".
The Hoos hope to rebound from this weekend when they host Duke
University at 9:40 pm on Friday at the Charlottesville Ice Park.

The Cavalier hockey team lost 5-2 to the Catholic University of
America on Saturday night.
The Cavs scored first on a shot by defenseman Ben Moser
(1st of his career) with an assist from Rob Borden in the first period.
The Hoo's could not hold the lead for long and found them selves
down 5-1 in the 3rd period when Caleb Dunn netted a shot
from the point to make it 5-2.
Joe Utzcategui was given the game puck for his effort in the game.
The team opens up it's ACCHL play this weekend when they host UNC on
Friday and Georgetown on Saturday at the Ice Park.

The Cavaliers lost to Maryland 11-0 in a game dominated by Maryland.
The Hoos seemed to be off pace and could not keep up with the faster
Terps.
Although the team gave up 11 goals, goalie Eric Brandam made several
good saves to keep the goals at 11. Brandam was given the game puck for
his performance.
The Cavaliers host Catholic University of America on Saturday night
at 9:40.

The Men's Ice Hockey team will host the Maryland Terrapins on Sat Oct 10,
at 9:40 at the Charlottesville Ice Park. The Cavs are coming off two

a strong D1 Maryland Team.

join Doug Godfrin and Eric Brandam as recipients of a game puck for
the most effective player during a game. Coach Tony Fischer gives out
one game puck per game to the player he feels helped the team the most
during the game.
Congratulations to Krill, Dunn, Godfrin and Brandam.

A combination of good play by JMU and penalties by UVa cost
the Cavaliers the game.
Once again JMU came out strong building a 3-0 lead in the 1st
13 minutes of the game. By the 2nd period the Hoos saw
themselves down by 5-0.
Ben Probert scored the 1st Virginia goal at the 14:31 mark of
the 2nd period. JMU followed up with 2 more of their own before
Andrew King netted a goal in the 3rd period making the score 7-2.
Kevin Miller scored the last Virginia goal in the 3rd period
matching a goal from JMU.
Goalie Eric Bradnam must be commended on his fine performance,
JMU could have easily scored 12 goals, but Bradnam closed the
door on several close range shots and a few breakaways.
Ben Moser had a strong game on defensive with several end to
end rushes, as did rookie Doug Godfrin who had several scoring
oppurtunities but could not get the puck behind the JMU goalie.
The Cavalier team did not play their best game, and hope to put
this one behind them as they prepare for the Commonwealth Cup
this weekend in Richmond.

The Men's Hockey team opened its season with an exciting overtime win
against JMU Friday night.
The Cavaliers came back from two 2 goal deficit to win the game.
Scoring for the Cavaliers were Kevin Miller, Joe Uzccategui,(2)
Ben Probert and Doug Godfrin(2). Godfrin put the puck in the net at
the 3:27 minute mark of overtime from a nifty pass from Ben Probert
to win the game.
Also playing well for the Hoos were 1st year goalie Eric Bradnam
who stopped 19 of 24 shots, including a 2nd period break away, and
rookie defensemen Rob Borden and Ben Moser.
JMU really took it to the Cavaliers early in the 1st period building
a 2-0 lead until Uzcatagui netted a rebound off a Andrew Lehrman shot
to make it 2-1. Then the Hoos scored two more goals by Probert
and Godfrin to take a 3-2 lead. Credit JMU , as they stormed back to
take a 5-3 lead half way into the 3rd period.
After coach Tony Fischer called a time out to slow JMU's momentum,
the Cavaliers came back with goals by Godfrin and Utcatagui to tie the
game at 5 at the 17:46 mark of the 3rd period.
In OT, Uva had numerous chances around the net but could not finish,
until Probert streaked down the right wing, taking his defensive man
with him and made a nifty saucer pass to a wide open Gofrin who put
the puck in the back of the net.
Both teams played extremely well and should be proud of the way
they handled the game.
The team hopes to continue its success as it meet JMU tonight at
the Charlottesville Ice park for a 9:40 start.
