  • Free Pistol   [top]
The program is 60 competition shots, typically consisting of 12 series of five shots per target. Firing is at a distance of 50 feet for most competitions but is held at 50 meters during national championships, which are modeled after the Olympics. The total time limit, including an unlimited number of sighting shots, is two hours. The firearm used to fire this match is a single-shot .22 caliber pistol. As the name indicates, the free pistol is relatively free from any configuration restrictions and has grips contoured to fit the shooter's hand.
  • Standard Pistol    [top]
The standard pistol course consists of 60 shots divided into three courses of 20 shots each. Before the record shots are fired, a five-shot sighers series is fired with a 150 second time limit. Each of the three courses consists of four series of five shots as follows:
...4 series, 5 shots each - 150 seconds each serie
...4 series, 5 shots each - 20 seconds each serie
...4 series, 5 shots each - 10 seconds each serie
In collegiate shooting, standard pistol is usually fired at 50 feet, but it is fired at 25 meters during national championships. The .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol used must comply with strict requirements for size, weight, trigger pull and grip configuration and must be able to fire five shots without reloading.
  • Air Pistol    [top]
The air pistol program is 60 competition shots in one hour, 45 minutes. In major competitions only one shot is fired per target while up to five shots per target are permitted in other matches. All air pistol shooting is at a distance of 10 meters and any sighting shots fired must be fired before the first record shot within the time limit. All air pistols fire lead pellets which are .177 caliber and are propelled by either compressed air or CO2.
  • Sport Pistol    [top]
The sport pistol course consists of 60 shots divided into two courses, a slow-fire and rapid-fire course, of 30 shots each. Before the record shots of each course are fired, a five-shot sighter series is fired. Each of the two courses consists of six series of five shots as follows:
...6 series, 5 shots each - 6 minutes each serie
...6series, 5 shots each, each shot fired in 3 seconds with 7 seconds in between.
In collegiate competition, this event is fired at 50 feet, but during national championships it is fired at 25 meters. Collegiately, this is an event for women only, but internationally it is fired by women and juniors(under 21).
