The Virginia Riding Team at the University of Virginia was founded in 1976. As a club sport, the riding team competes in affiliation with the Club Sports association in Zone 4 Region 2 of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). Garnering many accolades over the years, the team is a solid competitive force.

Team members have two weekly lessons in hunter seat equitation at The Barracks, a privately owned stable in Charlottesville. Coaches Claiborne Bishop, Maria Shannon, and Zachary Parks teach team lessons. Team members of all levels and ability show in ten to twelve intercollegiate shows throughout the year, traveling to other colleges and competing on the host school's horses. This creates a fair system of competition and challenges riders to ride effectively on an unfamiliar animal.

Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students, and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency of the University of Virginia.
