ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION TEAM

Background

ADAPT, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team, was formed in response to growing concern about alcohol and other drug use at the University of Virginia. The University-Wide Task Force on Alcohol Abuse suggested a peer education group as a part of a comprehensive plan to address high-risk drinking. ADAPT was created by the Center for Alcohol and Substance Education (CASE), a division of the Office of the Dean of Students. Recruiting and training began in the spring of 1999. In the fall of 1999, the original members of ADAPT defined the group's mission:

ADAPT is dedicated to addressing the issues of alcohol and other drug abuse in the University of Virginia community. As peer educators, we promote awareness, provide educational outreach, and serve as accessible resources for our fellow students. Our primary purpose is to minimize the abuse of alcohol and other drugs in an effort to promote a healthier environment at our University.

Group Structure

ADAPT is made up of peer educators who are assigned to one of three permanent committees: Awareness, Programming, and Resource Development. The chairs of these committees serve as the group leaders. The Advisors is Susie Bruce, Director of CASE. In consultation with the advisor, the committee chairs plan meetings, coordinate member recruiting and training, and facilitate group communication. The Awareness committee coordinates open events and speakers, including the annual Substace Abuse Awareness Week and Safe Spring Break Week. The Programming committee coordinates targeted programming to residence houses, Greek chapters, and other groups. This committee designs and scripts individual programs, responds to program requests, and determines a monthly schedule. All ADAPT members are expected to participate in such programs. The Resource Development committee maintains the ADAPT website, responds to e-mail and phone-mail inquiries, and develops group materials and publications. This committee also maintains resources for ADAPT members and promotes ADAPT to the University community through flyers, t-shirts, and informational tabling. In addition to the committees, each member is assigned to a temporary project group. Project groups convene during meetings to work on ad-hoc projects that do not fall under one specific committee.
