I work for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the nation's consumer protection advocate.  I am in the Bureau of Consumer Protection whose mission is to keep the marketplace fair by stopping unfair and/or deceptive practices in or affecting commerce.

I am a staff attorney in the Bureau of Consumer Protection's Division of Enforcement.  I do mostly civil law enforcement - bringing law enforcement actions against scam artists (my current specialties include scholarship frauds and employment frauds).

The FTC hires all sorts of people - attorneys, economists, etc.  All available positions are posted on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's website.

I'm certainly available to talk to brothers interested in law school, or the advantages / disadvantages of working in the government versus private practice (I used to be in private practice before moving to the government).  To the extent that there are open positions, I can help direct brothers to the best contact person. I'm also willing to give general advice.

Of interest to:
  • Those with strong programming backgrounds, regardless of any knowledge of the financial marketplace
  • For other positions (sales, account management, & a few others), we prefer people with finance backgrounds (or some practical knowledge of the financial marketplace)
All positions pay competitively with respect to experience and the New York job market. Matt is currently a "Product Manager".

USATODAY.com is a 24/7 operation specializing in the posting of breaking news and interactive features. Either a journalism degree or corresponding field experience is pretty much a must. In addition to strong writing skills, knowledge of basic HTML is also important ... as is some website design experience. The job requires a lot of creativity as well as flexibility (everyone rotates working nights and weekends). The work atmosphere is very informal and the job is lots of fun, especially when you get to write headlines like "Virginia tars and feathers UNC 86-66."

The types of positions available Entry level Content Developer positions come open the most often. Just like the USA TODAY newspaper, there are News, Money, Sports, Life, Tech and Weather sections. We've also got a growing multimedia department, which includes anything from work with audio and video to setting up online chats and discussion boards.

I will gladly review a resume and give advice via e-mail or over the phone (or in person if you're in the D.C. area). If the job candidate has the requisite experience, I'd certainly pass the resume on to the right person in the office. Howard is currently the Assistant Sports Editor.

Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve

(202) 736-5622
spilloff@frb.gov

The Board's three economic research divisions regularly hire research assistants who apply quantitative skills both to real-world policy issues and to high-level research projects. Applicants for Research Assistant positions generally have training in econometrics, mathematical statistics, or both, as well as facility with statistical packages such as SAS or a programming language such as C. Most positions also require training in economics through the intermediate theory level. In addition, study in areas such as money and banking, finance, and international trade theory is useful. Typically, research assistants work at the Board for about two years before going on to graduate programs or careers in economics, business, or related disciplines.

The Board accepts applications for Research Assistant positions throughout the year. The primary interviewing and hiring phase of the recruiting process for a given year is in the early spring, however, and therefore we recommend that you submit your completed application packet by January 31 of the year in which you wish to start work or as soon as possible thereafter.
