About Us

The Virginia Atheists & Agnostics is a Contracted Independent Organization (CIO) at the University of Virginia. Virginia Atheists & Agnostics was started in 2002 with the purpose of combating the stigma of atheism at UVA. Since our beginnings our mission has expanded to include promoting secular humanism and the separation of church and state.

Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency of the University. It is a separate and independent organization which is responsible for and manages its own activities and affairs. The University does not direct, supervise or control the organization and is not responsible for the organization’s contracts, acts or omissions.

What do we do?

In short, we have weekly meetings with a discussion topic and/or presentation and maintain an online, email-based discussion forum. We organize campus events that are social, political, philanthropic, or educational in nature.

What do we believe?

Virginia Atheists & Agnostics do not have a specific set of beliefs that participants must adhere to. Most students who participate in our meetings and activities are atheists, however, many are agnostics, humanists, freethinkers or qualify for more than one of the labels. We have also had regular attendees at meetings who are Christian.

What is our structure?

The only official members of Virginia Atheists & Agnostics are our officers. Thus, we do not have membership dues. We are supported financially through fundraisers, donations and UVA student council funds for CIOs. Students and others participate with us through the activities stated above, weekly meetings, events and our email-based discussion forum. In some sense, our group represents all atheist students at the University of Virginia, and to a lesser extent we represent those students whose beliefs are similar to those of atheists but do not have their own group on grounds.
