10/29/05 - UVA Defends ACC Title vs. Maryland
The Cavaliers did not get to play the University of Maryland
last year for the MAC-South Conference Championship. The Terrapins
did not make the trip down this fall for the ACC Tournament.
The two title holders got to meet today at Burley Field where
Virginia got the better of their rivals from the north, sweeping
the doubleheader 6-4 & 8-0. Game 1 was a back-and-forth
battle that featured five lead-changes. Kevin Belt kept the
Cavs in the game by allowing 4 runs over 6 innings. Matt Massey
pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief to get the win, thanks
in part to Matt Sherman scoring after reaching on a walk to
start the 8th. Pitcher Robert Cox stole the show in Game 2.
He went the distance in a dominant performance, allowing only
5 hits while striking out 13. Andrew Daley capped the scoring
in a 5-run 7th with a 2 rbi single. The Cavs have won their
last 7 contests.
10/15/05 - UVA Defends Home Turf
vs. W&M
Virginia ran its winning streak to 5 games with a double header
sweep of William & Mary in their first home games of the
fall season. Kevin Belt came in with a 6-2 deficit to pick
up the win in relief in Game 1. The Cavaliers scored 10 unanswered
runs, including a grand slam by Ryan Charles in the 6th to
seal the 12-6 victory. Matt Masey pitched 6 strong innings
in Game 2 to get a 7-4 win. Charles went deep in the 6th again
to provide insurance, but Victor Outlaw would not need it as
he pitched a scoreless 7th for his first career save. Nick
Bonard reached base in 7 of his 9 plate appearances, scoring
4 runs on the day. John Arseneau chipped in with 5 rbi. The
Cavaliers have a week off before returning to action at Burley
to take on last year's conference champions, the Maryland Terrapins.

10/2/05 - 2005 ACC Club Baseball
Tournament Champions!!!
Virginia went 3-1 over the weekend in Raleigh, NC to claim
the inaugural ACC Club Baseball Tournament Title. The Cavaliers
faced possible early elimination after losing the opening game
to UNC-Charlotte 7-2, but they stormed back against UNC (Chapel
Hill) in Saturday's second game to claim a 7-3 victory behind
the pitching of rookie Kevin Belt. When UNC-Charlotte lost
to Duke later that day, the Cavs became the Pool B winners
based on tie-breakers and advanced to play NC State in the
Semi-Finals on Sunday. UVA batted around in the 3rd inning
against the Wolfpack to take an early 4-run lead. That would
prove to be all Todd Zivic would need. He pitched a complete
game, giving up only 1 earned run and striking out 7 in a 9-2
win. The Finals featured a re-match between UVA and UNC. This
time UNC built up a 7-0 lead before Virginia's bats came alive.
They scored 10 unanswered, highlighted by 1st year 2nd baseman
Justin Armistead's 3-run homerun- the first of his career-
that gave the Cavs their first lead of the ballgame. 4th year
David Cassel picked up the win and 1st year Matt Massey got
the save as they held off the Tar Heels for a 10-9 win. Todd
was named tournament MVP for his performance.
9/25/05 - UVA
drops 2 at JMU
The 5th inning proved to be Virginia's downfall once again
as JMU tied it at 2 and went on to win Game 1 by a score of
4-2. JMU took an early lead in Game 2 and pitched out of jams
every inning to hold on for a 6-3 win.
