5/5/08 - Virginia Ends the Spring Season 13-9 overall The Cavaliers were in control of their own destiny going into the weekend series with conference rival Virginia Tech. Having won the previous series UVA needed just one win to have a chance at the MAC South title. The Hokie bats proved to be too much as Virginia dropped all three games in Salem, VA. With the playoffs out of the picture, the Cavaliers travelled to Richmond the next weekend for the final game, winning it in close fashion 6-5. The poor finish undermined the promising start to the season resulting in a 13-9 overall record and a 9-7 conference record for the 2008 spring season. 4/6/08 - The Cavaliers Even the Season Series with JMU The 'Hoos took two out of three from conference rival and leader James Madison this weekend. Jim McGowan threw 8+ innings of 2 run baseball for the Cavaliers in Game 1, but UVa was unable to muster enough offense, losing the game 3-2. After a disheartening 9th inning loss on Friday night, the 'Hoos fell behind 7-2 after the first inning in Game 2. Paced by Adam Ventre and Nick Bonard's combined effort of 7 for 9 with 6 runs, a HR, 7 RBIs, and 2 SBs, the UVa offense outlasted the Dukes for an exciting 17-15 win in Game 2. Game 3 started off promising for UVa as they built an early 9-1 lead. The potent Cavalier offense rolled on, led by Keaton Brooks' Home Run and Nick Herbst's 3 RBI game. Patrick Yaroch tossed an impressive complete game for his first victory of the spring, compiling 5 punchouts while allowing only 3 runs as the 'Hoos dominated the Dukes 13-3 to take the very important series. 3/23/08 - Virginia Squashes Spiders The Cavaliers won three games over the weekend agains University of Richmond to extend their winning streak to 7 games. Virginia came out swinging on Friday night taking the first game 13-1. The bats cooled off in game two but came out ahead 5-3. In game three, the Cavalier offense again found its form winning a shortened game 15-2. Virginia spends the next three weekends on the road beginning with a must series agains rival JMU. 3/23/08 - Cavaliers Sweep Bulldogs The Cavaliers swept the University of Georgia Bulldogs during a three game series on Easter Weekend. Virginia held the Bulldogs off in game one winning 8-7. It took a 5 run sixth inning to put the Cavs ahead in game two, winning 10-5. On Sunday, the Cavs fell behind 6-0 before rallying in two separate innings to tie the game at 8, eventually winning in extra innings by a score of 10-9. Next week Virginia hosts Richmond in the final home series of the year. 3/16/08 - Cavaliers Crumble Hokies The Cavaliers took two of three to win the first series against Virginia Tech. Great defense and a strong pitching performance paved the way to a 7-3 victory in front of a rowdy Friday night crowd. The Cavaliers started off slowly in game 2, falling to an 8-0 deficit before taking the lead. The slugfest ended with UVA on the losing side 17-14. The Cavs bounced back in game three to win 10-4 over the number 11 team in the nation. 3/1/08 - UVA drops First Conference Series to JMU After losing the first game of the series 10-5, the Cavaliers stepped up to beat the dukes in game two, 8-5. With the momentum seemingly shifted, the Cavaliers scored early and often in the rubber match only to give up the lead in ninth inning. The final score was an 11-9 loss after UVA could not mount a comeback. This weekend UVA takes a week off before playing William and Mary in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader. 2/18/08 - UNC Takes Two in Virginia's opening series The Cavalier's started off the spring season with a three game series against the number one ranked team in the NCBA. UVA won the first game 4-3, then lost the last two 3-2 and 6-4 respectively. Great pitching kept the Cavaliers in every game, but the Cavs were unable to get the bats started until the late innings. Virginia hosts rival JMU in its first conference matchup this weekend. 1/09/08 - Virginia Spring Schedule Updated The schedule for UVAs 2008 spring season is almost complete. The Cavaliers open the season against the NCBA defending champs, UNC Chapel Hill. Conference play begins just a week later against JMU on February 23rd. New conference divisions for this year means there are just four teams in the MAC-South. They are: Virginia, Virginia Tech, JMU and Richmond. Each team will play eachother twice, only the first place team will have a chance to go to the NCBA world series.
