About Classes

UDC offers two varieties of classes: Non-performing and Performing. Non-performing classes are just for fun and technique work. There's almost no commitment involved. Performance classes spend a majority of their time learning a routine which is presented at UDC's end-of-semester show. You must audition for performing classes, with the exception of the open class. NOTE: UDC does not offer the open class every year.

All classes are student run and taught. Students wishing to teach a class must come to the choreographer auditions (see the Choreographer Stuff page for details). The classes run about 8-10 weeks.

Each year we encourage out choreographers to design classes for a wide range of dancers, from beginner to advanced and from hip-hop to tap. If you think we're missing something, please come audition to be a choreographer, or send us an email and we'll suggest it to the other choreographers.

About Shows

The show will be held at the Martin Luther King Performing Arts Center of Charlottesville High School at the end of the semester. Watch for advertisements around grounds!

In order to perform in the show, dancers must be in a performing class. Also, they must pay their dues on time and not miss more than 2 classes. These conditions are very important. Also, you must attend both the show and the dress rehearsal.

See the Calendar for important show dates.

About Auditions

Almost all performing classes have auditions. This is necessary to keep the classes manageable. We encourage you to try out for as many classes as you want*, as you may not get into your first choice.

Seperate auditions are held for each class. The choreographer will teach a portion of their dance, and then you will perform it for the judges three at a time. The judges include two exec members and the choreographer(s). They will rate you on four categories: accuracy, movement, projection, and overall quality, each score being between 0 and 5. Be sure to ask exactly what each choreographer is looking for. These scores are averaged and used to get the final list.

Occasionally we will have an open class. No audition are required for this class. Entry will be offered on a first-come first-serve basis, and the class will be limited in size to about 25 (any bigger than that, and its just gets crazy!). The executive board will decide at choreographer auditions whether there is a dance that would work well with this open class.

* Dancers in an the Adv Hip Hop class are not allowed in the Int Hip Hop class, and visa-versa. The same holds for the Adv/Int Jazz classes. This allows more people to participate in these popular genres.
