Events Funding Requests Health Insurance Communications Huskey Expo	About Us GSASC has two sets of priorities this year. The first set involves allocation of student fees. We plan to continue supporting grad student conferences and workshops, as we have in the past. We also want to organize more and better social events this year. Other priorities include beginning a new speaker series, and the organization of a Graduate Research Exhibition in the spring. The other set of priorities involve lobbying the administration for improved support of graduate students. We hope the administration will work with us to eliminate the summer fee that Student Health plans to impose on graduate students next year. We hope to increase the number of dissertation year fellowships offered by the faculty. We would like to see UVA provide subsidized day care for graduate students' children. In 2007-2008 we: Organized the successful and well-attended Huskey Graduate Research Exhibition, continued to fund Graduate Student IM sports teams and various colloquia/conferences and talks that benefitted Graduate Students in Arts and Sciences. We organized monthly Happy Hours and Halloween and St. Patrick's Day parties to bring students from different departments together. We made progress in getting Research Only Graduate Student acess to some sporting events in exchange for the partial Athletic Fees they pay by researching the other schools in our conference and making our complaints known to various administrators. In 2005-2006 we made great strides: In addition to running the Huskey Graduate Research Exhibition, hosting our Careers in Academics panel, funding graduate student IM-Rec sports teams, starting a monthly graduate social hour, providing a free yoga class for graduate student and hosting our annual Halloween Bash, we were able to cosponsor multiple colloquia/conferences and talks, including the Annual Black Women’s Leadership Conference, conferences in each of: English, German Studies, Classics, Chemistry, and Biosciences. We also contributed $6,500 to the Huskey Travel Awards, for graduate students to attend conferences and raised $1,200 for Salvation Army disaster relief efforts. Additionally we were able to retain opportunities for graduate students to publish and get published in the graduate student run journals Amalgam and Meridian. In 2004-2005 we were able to: perform a massive graduate student survey, establish a mailing list of all A&S grads (Grad Connections), organized the Huskey Graduate Research Exhibition, hosted a graduate writing workshop, and funded Co-operative housing at UVA. We also cosponsored many colloquia and conferences for diverse disciplines. The Council is also a member of the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students, a graduate student advocacy organization which helped defeat a 1997 congressional measure to tax tuition waivers. Recently, we sponsored a Graduate Student Survey which gathered information on needs and current living and working conditions of graduate students at the University of Virginia. This survey was conducted during the Fall semester 2004. The results of the survey were officially made public at a Town Hall Meeting held on Monday, February 7, 2005 in the South Meeting Room in Newcomb hall. Information gathered from the survey pertaining to on fellowships and teaching assistantships will be made available as soon as possible.
