Huskey Research Exhibition
Newcomb Hall
March 19, 2008

Introduction

The exhibition will provide a forum for all graduate students in Arts and Sciences to publicize their research and will reward students who present superior research. In addition, we are recognizing those students who show excellence in the performing arts.
Awards will be given for the top presentations in both paper and poster formats in each of four categories: Arts & Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences, Biological & Biomedical Sciences, and Physical Sciences & Mathematics. All abstract submissions received by 6:00pm on Friday, February 29th will be judged, and the top submissions will be selected for a poster or oral paper presentation (please see Exhibition Guidelines for a complete description). Participants will be notified by March 3rd regarding the status of their submissions. Students presenting a paper will be asked to give a 15 minutes oral presentation, with 3-5 minutes for questions at the conclusion of the talk. It is expected that we will receive a greater number of submissions for oral presentations than can be accepted. Those submitting abstracts for oral presentations but not accepted will have the opportunity to present a poster at the Exhibition. Performing arts presenters should prepare a 15 minute piece. Format -Posters & Papers

Posters:

Students interested in presenting a poster are to submit abstract no greater than 1 page in length. These abstracts will be judged and those chosen to present will be notified no later than March 3rd 2008. Participants will present a poster and be available for discussion during at least one hour of the poster session. The research presented may be any original work done while a graduate student at UVa, whether or not that work is directly related to a Master's thesis or Doctoral dissertation. The student should be the primary researcher in any collaboration presented. Posters will be on display in the Newcomb Hall main ballroom from 9:00am through 1:00pm of the exhibition. A tentative schedule for discussions will be posted by one week prior to the event.

Papers:

Participants interested in presenting a paper are to submit an extended abstract 2 pages in length. These abstracts will be judged and those chosen to present will be notified no later than March 3rd 2008. Those not chosen will be given the option to present a poster at the Exhibition. Participants will give presentations in allotted 15-minute time slots; a presenter should be sure to allow 3-5 minutes at the end of the presentation for questions from the audience. Technology requests should be made at the time of entry to the organizers, but in order to avoid any technology-related problems, the presentation should be used directly from a CD or flash-drive. Judges from the participant’s research category will evaluate the presentation based on delivery, design, and content.
