Minutes from meeting of
February 5, 2001
Call to order
Guest: Joy Asekun (First Black Women's Leadership Conference)
Budget and schedule has changed since we first got e-mail.
Genesis of conference. Last year conference for black men organized by
some of the fraternities was inspiration. They worked with the Women's
center to create forum to deal with black women's issues. They have
keynote: she will speak for free. Jacklyn Monk. She relates to the Women
Center's ongoing topic on the role of media and women. She is the editor
of Vibe magazine. She used to work for Ms. One of the first black women
to hold such a position. It will be 10-3 on Saturday, April 14. Meetings
with Ms. Monk followed by several workshops. The budget has decreased.
They have canceled the breakfast. They will need travel expenses for Ms.
Monk. They will allow for the first 60 that respond to the invitations.
It has been a real learning experience for the graduate students
involved. They have learned a great deal about how to run a conference.
The Hues mentors will be involved. They are graduate students who mentor
undergraduates. They do see it as a more inclusive conference.
They are requesting about $500.
Questions: Will some of the workshops be open to anyone. Yes, the
workshops will be open to everyone after lunch. Keynote speaker will
speak at the lunch.
They are hoping balance between the graduates and undergraduates.
The undergraduate NAACP is paying for the use of Minor Hall.
They hope to have faculty involved.
Funded at $500 (full request).
Treasurer's Report:
Confusion due to the retirement of Dean Husky. We have no idea what has
happened with our account in Dec. and Jan. We probably have about $13,
590. $1000 of that is gone for the Research Exhibition and Tavern.
Secretary's report:
Minutes approved. In the future they will be e-mailed to all.
President's report:
End of semester Tavern was a bomb. Music was great, but only 30 showed
up. It seems that too many parties were held that same night. We took a
$500 hit, although we did pay off the beer with the door.
Grad Health Insurance. We sent letter to various important people. Open
letter to Casteen. The gist is that there is progress. The administration
is looking for ways to fund health insurance.
BOV: Sasha Wilson has been elected as student BOV member. She is a fourth
year in the Curry school's joint masters program. This does give graduate
students some voice.
We need to think about officers for next year. We really need continuity
to know what to do in the future. We are all encouraged to return. We
also need officers. With the changes in the administration, we must take
a role in educating the new administration. In the past, we haven't used
the undergraduate election system, although we may want to consider doing
that.
Honor: Justin Reese.
The honor committee would like our official support of the referendum
coming up on the honor system. Six proposal presented by the review
committee were proposed for a vote. Only some minor changes were made
from the initial proposals. Most of the substance was preserved. They are
also asking us to inform our departments about the upcoming vote. The
graduate students could make the difference in whether this passes or
not. Each proposal will be voted on separately. The ballot will be with
the student vote at the end of February. A pamphlet will be sent out just
for graduate students.
Voting on the proposal to endorse honor measures was delayed until
departmental reactions could be collected. [Proposal passed].
The Honor Committee needs new reps. The changes taking place next year
will determine how honor will function for the next 15 years. A chance to
have a great deal of influence on the process.
StudCo: Nothing.
Old Business: Research exhibition. Josh did a wonderful job (although he
could have used more help). Participation was much better this year.
Faculty Senate wants to help out more next year. Possibly professors
could be assigned judging duties as a committee assignment. Also, the
Faculty Senate can reserve Newcomb before student groups. They could help
us get a good time for the exhibition. Josh also spoke to the BOV about
the research fair.
We are now on the Connections mailing list.
New Business: Med School event at the Tavern this Saturday.
QualChoice meeting will be the February 27.
Patrick is working on getting the newsletter our soon.
Departmental concerns: English rep. said that Dean will no longer cover
costs associated with job interviews. This is a policy change.
