Minutes from meeting of
February 10, 2003

Call to Order 7:05pm

Presentations
    Micah Schwartz, StudCo Pres., Reading Days Proposal
  • Micah has submitted a formal proposal to Pres. Casteen to add two reading days in the fall semester and one reading day in the spring
  • the provost seems supportive
  • if approved, the proposal would likely not be implemented until 2005

    Brett Harrison, StudCo Pres. candidate
  • wants to resolve printing situation a la the law school's system
  • wants to increase funding for grads from the administration & legislature
  • wants to create an official online book swap
  • wants better representation for grad students on student council

Funding Requests
    Jordan Taylor, Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference
  • Asking for $1000; got $1500 last year
  • Have funded in full for 12 consecutive years
  • Topic: "Truth, Lies & Representation"
  • Keynote: Michael Bening; audience of about 150 people expected
  • Already have secured funding from the English Department and a private donation
  • GSASC voted unanimously to fund in full

Treasurer's Report

  • Email snafu has caused disbursement problems
  • Our budget looks good. We are not on pace to exhaust our funds this year

President's Report

    Maura met with the dean regarding GLU's 4 points
  • job descriptions were sent out
  • the administration will not support the proposal to give all second-year grads in-state status
    Also met with UVA VP Bill Harmon
  • discussed ways to ensure adequate minority representation
  • Harmon wants to provide more support for grads, through the research exhibition and by providing a reception for residents of the Range
    No one volunteered to organize the research exhibition
  • Maura has drafted an email offering a paid position to organize it; will distribute via gsasc email list

StudCo Report

    We need two studco reps for the new term which begins in March; no one volunteered. Time commitment:
  • Regular Tuesday meetings

Honor Report

    We need two honor reps for the new term which begins in March; no one volunteered. Time commitment required:
  • Regular Sunday night meetings (60-90 min.)
  • Sometime investigative panels, mid-week (2-3 hrs)
  • Occasional jury service: Saturdays (anywhere from 2 hours to all day)

Departmental Concerns

    Travel funds for grads are not widely known about
    Discussed ideas for a spring social event
