Kurt Jensen, Graduate Student Lobby
- A national graduate student lobby has been formed to lobby
Congress to make graduate and professional student stipends
tax-exempt, as they were prior to 1986
- Feb. 19-21 will be the second time they go to Washington in
person
- They hope to get an official position from UVA
- Council voted unanimously to issue a resolution of support:
"The graduate students of the University of Virginia ask that legislation be
enacted that would return graduate student stipends to their former
Federal Income Tax exempt status."

Student Healthcase Insurance Committee report
- We're staying with Chickering again for next year
- Premiums are expected to rise by 16.5% next year (about $170 for a
single person), compared with a national average premium hike of 22%
- It is not yet clear how much of the premium increase will be paid
for by UVA
Maura and Ben will represent Grad Council at a meeting between the
dean and GLU concerning
- mid-year tuition hikes
- job descriptions for all graduate student TA's, instructors and
graders
- and a grievance system for employment-related complaints
Council agreed to hold meetings on the second monday of the month for
the rest of the semester

Rob has re-assumed his post as studco rep; we need another
Honor Report
20 honor cases in the pipeline; Honor won its most recent lawsuit
Departmental Concerns
Research Exhibition
- We sent out a request for volunteers to organize the research
exhibition
- If we don't get any volunteers, we will send another offering two
paid positions to anyone willing to organize it
