Lori Nicolaysen - University Career Services

She just took over the office. She wanted to meet with Grad Council to let us know how the office can help.

Location: Bryant Hall (Stadium) with short term parking. She has walk ins 2-4 Fridays. She also has time for appointments. 924-8900.

Primarily she works with people in the non-academic job market. She can also help with those looking for administrative positions at universities.

The can perform CV critiques (for academic or non-academic jobs). They can help with resume creation.

Externships: graduate students can also take part. Basically, week long job shadowing opportunities.

Mock Interviews; information; assessments.

Graduate students can participate in on-grounds recruiting.

They can also provide job counseling. They can help with both basic logistics of the job search and how to convert academic skills to the job markets.

Resources: career library (a number of book that have to do with academic jobs); on-line resources (www.virginia.edu/[tilde]career); handouts; UCAN - it finds alumnus who are willing to be career mentors; graduate school career resource network - so that undergraduates can find out about the field

Alumni career services website is a little more targeted to "grown-ups." That site might be more useful for graduate students.

They are also available for programming in departments.

There are typical fields associated with the humanities: teaching (pre-college), administrative positions (academic or not), non-profit administration (culture is very similar to the academic world), publishing, government work

Word of mouth is a good way that we can help the office. We should also let them know if we see holes in the system.

The office will prepare an e-mail to be distributed to all.

Sherry Fohr - Association for Innovative and Interdisciplinary Studies

A new group trying to encourage interaction between disciplines. The group is funded by Dean Huskey ($1000). The are requesting money specifically for outreach program. It allows graduate students to speak to middle and high schools in the community. They are offering a $50 stipend for each visit.

Now, they have 24 members. Many others have sent e-mails. 17 people showed up for the meeting.

Budget: $600 for presentations. $75 for supplies.

Can we pay stipends? Josh say yes.

What kind of responses are they getting from students? They are now just compiling a list of schools.

Discussion

$375 approved with the understanding that they can request additional funds over e-mail if interest is strong.

Discussion of English proposal. $700 approved for the English department symposium.

Secretary: minutes from October approved.

Treasury's report:

The only expenditures in October were pizza and photocopying ($54.84). Some budgeted funds were withdrawn. $8,265.00 total.

President's report:

Good news. Cav Daily article on need for graduate student funds. Much lobbying for faculty senate was done last year. They will take on this issue. This seems to be a direct result of our efforts. What should we do to capitalize on this? Husky said provost is talking about ways to pay for graduate students' health insurance. He suggested we should make contact with the faculty senate committee, We must get the undergraduates on our side. We should all contact the members of the faculty senate in our department. We may also want to introduce a resolution to student council.

Connections information: the undergrads receive a weekly report of events on campus. Graduate students will be added to this.

Patrick would like to send out an e-mail newsletter three times a year. He would like to do something for the end of the semester.

Committee to replace Huskey has not yet met. The dean of admissions will take on his advising to us.

StudCo Report: Rich agrees that a student council resolution would be easy to write up.

Student center: first floor would be lounge. Second floor: dance space. Third floor: would enter on Newcomb Plaza. On that same level food. Fourth: retail. Fifth: arcade games, pool, etc.

This would free up a lot of room for more office space in Newcomb Hall. It would also provide more meeting space. We just need to keep pushing the reps in the future to keep pushing for space for us.

They really need two graduate students for the appropriations committee.

The are going to push for good system for collecting and distributing course evaluations.

The council has established the office of chief technology officer. They are updating the new student council server. They will be creating "My UVA" homepage.

We should make an effort to publicize the possibility of graduate CIOs.

Old business:

Webmaster: approved on a semester basis. $75 a semester.

South Street Brewery Happy Hour. We had a turnout of about 50 people. Overall it went well. Next bar night is next Thursday, 6-9 p.m.

Research exhibition: Feb. 1-2 (Thursday and Friday). Will be in Newcomb Hall. The cost is cheaper than Alumni Hall. Word need to get out to students and faculty. We will send e-mail out through Harmon. We need faculty judges. We need to secure the money. Format and five minute talk.

Health insurance committee: the student council person wants to meet with some of us. We need talk to the people in the office of the various administrative offices.

New Business CEPC - approves all permanent course syllabi. We have rep there.

End of semester Tavern Social. Friday December 8th. Last day of classes. 80s night music. Five dollar cover. 9-1.
