November 10th 2003

Visitors

Adam Hyde - Graduate Student in Economics
    * Funding request for Econ Dept Student Workshop
    * Motion to fund at $2000. seconded. Passes 7:6
    * Motion to fund at full $2300 with condition of soliciting funding/ co-sponsorship from other departments, additionally specific details from committed 2nd speaker. Motion withdrawn.

Jon Mailesic

    * Returns to represent Women's Center to further clarify questions raised when he first presented funding request for Women's Center International Series
    * Council approved $500

Committee's progress reports

    Research Exhibition
      * Two chairs selected from 8 interested, 4 applicants
      * University wide Research Week- Graduate students Tuesday/Wednesday & All Students Friday
    Speaker Series
      * 1st installment, with Dr. Ian Stevenson rocked. Great q&a. full capacity, good food. Spent $278 food and $75 dinner gift certificate for speaker
      * 2nd installment next Monday: sex in the academy.
      * motion to fund at $375 for 2nd installment funding. Passes.
    Events
      * Starr Hill Halloween party smashing success. Capacity at 10:45. approximately $1000 cost.
      * Walnut Creek get-together: 12 people came and had fun.
      * Motion to reimburse Cheryl @ $25 for park shelter passed
      * Working on bar night
      * Working on email list serve
      * Upcoming: wine & cheese Saturday night Nov. 15 7-10pm Garrett Hall Commons. Motion to fund @ $75. motion passed

President's Report

    * Need 2nd StudCo Rep from GSAS.
    * Research fees- the saga continues. Meeting coming with Dean Ayers & GSC President.
    * Summer health insurance $30 fee - we decide to choose our battles and drop this issue.
    * Student health insurance - our second spot on SHIC to be relinquished to GLU
    * Option to cancel December meeting if no new funding requests.

Vice Presidents Report

    * National Association of Graduate and Professional Students are lobbying against taxing stipends.

Honor Report

    * Working on decreasing adversarial nature of initiation/trials
    * Referendum to reevaluate second sanction

New Business

    * Gavin, judge from UJC, presents info on new UBE (University Board of Elections- if it passes as expected in fall referendum).
    * Reps. Tom and Andre to form Constitutional review committee. Charged also with investigating if GSC should switch to UBE. Will report at January meeting.
    * Anthropology Rep concerned that money to fund grad students as RA's- deconstructing fellowship packages to reallocate TA money. Will look into President's Fellowship and report back.
