Minutes from meeting of
October 4, 2000
Call to order 8:20 PM
Visitors:
Graduate English Conference (James Parr presenting)
Annual event. One of the biggest conferences on campus. They have
lined up John Hollander and Marjorie Perloff. The English dept. and
other sources will cover all expenses for the speakers. They are
asking GSASC for money for most other expenses. An electronic CFP has
already been sent. They need money for a mass mailing and for a flier
and poster. Also, they would like funds for postage and copy
services. $1200 is the amount requested. [actually $1500]. They have
had participation from both other departments on campus and other
departments.
No papers are rejected.
Questions:
Funded in the past? Maura told James that it had been funded in the
past. They will also asked Dean Husky for funds. They will ask him
for money for reception.
Can you break down the figure? $400 for design and $400 for
production of posters.
How many students from UVA? Probably 90% UVA, with 70-80% of those
from the English department. Last year about 12 panels of three to
four papers each. They are hoping for more this year.
Has any electronic notice been sent to other departments? Not yet.
What is the date? March 2nd and 3rd.
Teaching Resource Center (Erin McGlothlin and Dorothe Bach)
There are three graduate associates from the college of Arts and Sciences.
Services they offer: They have many books. A teaching portfolio
workshop at the end of the year.
Workshops: They can offer workshops on whatever teaching interests
that we have. They will organize it and put it together. They will
find people who can come and talk to you about whatever issue
regarding teaching. The TRC has budget for going out to lunch with
interested parties. A workshop could be as small as five students and
could last for and hour to an hour and a half.
Individual services: They can videotape our teaching and then discuss
our teaching techniques.
Teaching analysis poll: One representative comes in 30 minutes before
the end of class and discusses with the students the quality of the
teaching. They have interview techniques to avoid off the wall
responses and concentrate on the comments that can really help the TA
develop as a teacher.
Dance Marathon: It has been existence for three years. The idea
originated at Penn State, where they raised $3-4 million last year.
UVA raised $25,000 last year. The marathon lasts 24 hours. Each team
needs to raise at least $50. The money goes to the Sarah Du Bose
fund. It is a fund for the NICU at the hospital. A team can split up
the dancing. There will be a presentation at the end of October. Each
hour will have a different theme of music. It will be Feb. 23-24 in
Mem Gym. (www.uvadm.org).
Secretary's Report: Minutes on last meeting approved pending
correction of typo.
Treasure's Report: The social at the Tavern more or less paid for
itself. 182 people brought in $546. Perhaps we could raise the price
to $5 and still have a bargain price. $8,320 left for the semester
without any adjustments for enrollment. That includes our surplus
from last year. The figures are off and will be checked.
President's report:
The search committee for Dean of Arts and Sciences has been created.
There is one graduate student from environmental sciences. We are
mystified about how this student was selected and why the
representatives of graduate students were not consulted. We should
consult with this student to make sure a wide variety of views are
represented. It will probably be easy to get on Husky committee,
although Lowe committee may be harder to get on.
We should all take a look at the constitution and by-laws. They are
on the web site under general information.
South Street Happy Hour: The second Thursday of each month. $2 beer
and $1 off appetizers. First time Oct. 12, 6:00-9:00 PM.
NAGPS: We are members of this association. They have a health care
plan. There will be a nation conference in Nashville in late October.
Women's Center: They have a variety of workshops they can present.
Patrick has been chosen to be on the board that chooses the student BOV member.
StudCo: There is a new web site for the Cavalier tenants association.
A committee will be formed to study the living wage issue. The
students have spoken to dean Harmon about the lack of a good student
center on campus. There will be a big open forum tonight about the
situation. They would like more office and storage space for CIOs and
GSASC.
There are many interesting committees that graduate students might
want to join. Rich will pass along information about them.
Old business: Web master. We will discuss it over e-mail.
New business: Future meeting times. Meeting set for Thursday, Nov. 2
at 7:30. It will be in the Astronomy building.
Department concerns:
Astronomy: for this year only they will subsidize health insurance.
This money will not be there in future years. We should get HIC back
together.
Environmental sciences: The chair said that he would fund health
insurance if they were willing to drop some other social events.
Halloween party will be sponsored by Darden the Saturday before. $10
at the door and all the beer you can drink.
Biology is concerned about parking.
Chemistry is trying to get health insurance.
We will table the English request pending a detailed proposal.
Meeting ends at 9:55.
