Visitors
Funding Requests
Robin Field, Writing Center: Dissertation Writing Workshops
- requesting $700 out of $3090 budget
- have requested funding from several other sources
- workshops accept all who are interested; no charge this year
- council approved $700 in funding
Biology Grad and Postdoc Association: year-end speaker
- requested $1270 out of $1620 budget
- Bio dept provided full funding last year; not this year due to budget cuts
- expected attendance: 150
- council approved funding level of $770
Lori Nicolayson, University Career Services: authors' job market talk for grads
- applies mainly to the humanities
- requesting $224 out of $324 budget
- should take place in early November
- council approved funding of $224
Presentations
Bill Murad, Teaching Resource Center
- asked council reps to help get the word out about TRC services, especially:
- Teaching Analysis Polls
- Videotape Consulting
- Teaching Portfolio workshop

Robin Field, working on crosswalk safety
- 2 faculty members have been hit while crossing JPA
- letterwriting campaign a success! have gained indirect access to Leonard Sandridge
- city council's response has been laughable: they have placed flags in barrels on either side of the street and encourage
pedestrians to wave the flags at auto traffic as they cross the street
- Crosswalk Safety Campaign goals are:
- ticket nonyielding drivers
- get lights and better signage
- get rumble strips installed
- consistency at all crosswalks
- institute a Crosswalk Awareness Week
- GSASC passed a resolution of support: "We, the GSASC, support efforts to improve crosswalk safety"
Micah Schwartz, working to get more reading days prior to final exams
- wants to extend the semester to accommodate two extra reading days before or during finals
- solicited input on how this might affect grads
- micah will research tradeoffs associated with adding reading days and return with ideas for a resolution
Treasurer's Report
- expected revenues from grad activity fees: $33,764. will have hard numbers at next meeting
- funding already committed: about $10,000 (including this meetings funding decision
- we're on budget
Starr Hill Social
- Law School can't contribute due to a conflicting event; Med won't support; Darden didn't respond
- expected event costs: $1550 (including DJ)
- expected revenues to offset costs: $1000
- council voted for full funding
President's Report
spoke to President Casteen regarding budget cuts:
- UVA hopes to decrease state budget dependence from 12% to 9%
- expect a tuition increase next semester and next year
- the administration is trying not to furlough or lay off any faculty
GLU Report
Printing
- someone at ITC said grads will have the same printing privileges as faculty
- exactly what those privileges are is unclear
Membership
- Already 100 paid members
- goal: 250-300 paid members by the end of the year
some faculty members are calling for UVA to use endowment funds to supplement Arts & Sciences funding
StudCo Report
second-semester freshmen can't park on-grounds any more, starting next year
- this might help improve crosswalk safety
Honor Report
first open honor trial in four years starts next month
