Treasurer's Report

  • we don't have solid budget figures yet

President's Report

    Graduate Labor Union Representative Issue
  • passed a motion to create a non-voting position for a GLU representative. This representative will give regular reports on GLU activities and issues. Goal of this motion was to identify and act on opportunities for the two organizations to collaborate so as to better represent graduate students. This year's representative is Ben Daniels

  • Maura has had ongoing contact with ITC regarding printing budget cuts

Honor Report

  • all honor cases stemming from physics paper copying scandal have concluded
  • there will be an open honor trial September 19 on the fourth floor of Newcomb Hall. This will be the first open honor trial in two years
  • advised that TAs that "bump a grade" (i.e. pass a student who should have failed) can be charged with an honor offense

Old Business

    Athletic Dept.
  • Summer gym fees were raised and services were cut. Head of Campus Sports & Rec says the summer fee is cheaper than ACAC's summer membership. Darren and Ryan will continue to try to make progress

New Business/Department Concerns

    University Budget Cuts
  • discussed and reviewed main budget cut impacts on graduate students: printing limits, inadequate departmental printing facilities, reduced library hours, pushes to get grads off department rolls
  • seems like humanities departments are most affected
  • decided to form a committee to be composed of reps from departments most affected by budget cuts. The committee will solicit graduate student feedback concerning the cuts, prioritize the issues, and decide on a course of action to respond to the cuts and minimize their impact on graduate students' work. Committee (so far) will consist of Maura, Sarah Painitz, Jad Donohoe, Kevin Cole

    Starr Hill Social

  • Darren says law school will participate in a Starr Hill social, to be held 5-6 weeks hence Research Exhibition
  • Kelly reviewed last year's research exhibition. Main points: attending faculty were very impressed, and it put money in deserving graduate students' pockets. Drawbacks: could have been scheduled better; was difficult to get commitments from faculty judges
  • Kelly is compiling a handbook for future research exhibition organizers
  • the council expressed its intention to hold another research exhibition this year
  • Maura will contact the dean re: the availability of prize money

    Meeting Schedule

  • this year's meetings will be held on the first monday of each month. Location will be the graduate lounge on the second floor of Bryan Hall

Meeting adjourned 8:35pm
