Committee's progress reports
President's Report
* We as Grad Council have a great responsibility to the graduate
students at UVA and we need to do more this year.
* Graduate Councils at other universities are able to accomplish big
things and we should be able to do the same.
Vice Presidents Report
* Announcement about Grad Connections email
* We would like to have a list of clubs on Grounds that cater to graduate
students in the Arts & Sciences. Representatives were encouraged to notify
council of any such clubs and provide URLs if applicable or contact
information if possible
* Report on Social Committee. Spent $500 over the summer,
on intramural sports teams, sports equipment, berry picking event, and
other fun activities for graduate students.
2nd Vice Presidents Report
* Email me if anything is wrong on the website or if you are bored (or
both).
Honor Report
StudCo Report
GLU Report
* Former president and current Grad Council Rep from Religious Studies,
Craig Danielson, reported that GLU has new officers this year. Once again,
health insurance will be a big issue for them this year.
Old Business
Constitution
* Motion was made to pass second ratification of constitutional revisions
and was passed unanamously
Graduate Student Survey
* The administration is totally on board
* Tom has a meeting with them soon to talk about progress
Student Evaluations
* StudCo passed a resolution to add 5 new questions on student
evaluations
* Grad Council probably won't have much of a say in what goes on at this
point
New Business
Treasurer and 2nd StudCo Representative
* We elected Anna Macintosh as the new Treasurer
* No one was brave enough to volunteer to be the 2nd StudCo
Representative. An email will be sent out to grad students to try to find
someone.
Formation of Budget, Graduate Student Welfare, and Teaching and Research
Committees
* The Budget Committee would hear funding
request proposals and make recommendations to
Council.
* The Graduate Student Welfare Committee would tackle such issues as
Health Insurance, Child Care, and Diversity
* The Teaching and Research Committee would be in charge of the Graduate
Research Exhibition, the Food for Thought Lectures, and issues pertaining to
TAs and Graduate Instructors
* These committees (other than the Budget Committee) should include graduate
students who are not representatives on Grad Council.
* Questions were raised about how mush autonomy these committees should
have.
Health Insurance and Grad Student Funding
* We should pay a student to investigate other options for health
insurance besides Chickering and to see what other universities do for health
insurance. * The purpose would be to give grad students as much
information about alternatives as possible, as well as being able to negotiate
with Chickering.
Honor System Reforms
* Panel to discuss Honor System - September 27 6:00 pm in the Rotunda.
* 2 or 3 graduate students are needed to speak about their experiences
with the Honor System.
Renewing NAGPS membership
* Motion was made to fund the $300 dues and passed unanamously.
South Lawn Project
* New Cabell Hall will be torn down to create an extension of The Lawn.
* Space to be used by graduate students should be included in the plans.
Charterd Univeristies Initiative
* Big issue these days that could effect graduate students.
Bylaws
* We need to authorize these every year, according to Robert's Rules.
* Once decisions are made about committees, these can be authorized.
Visit by Board of Visitors member(s)
* Student rep this year on the BOV is a law student. * We may
have to reschedule a meeting to accomodate members of the BOV who would like
to attend one of our meetings.
Meeting ended at 8:45pm
