Collegiate Challenge

The next Collegiate Challenge trip is planned for the fabulous Hilton Head Island, SC. One of the organizers of the trip, Mychal Cohen writes:

"It's that time of year again. Your classes are stealing the joy from your life. That rager you went to last week wasn't as ragey and awesome as usual. You're looking for something more, something better. Well it is your lucky day because the Habitat Beach Week trip sign-ups just opened. This year we'll be headed to sunny Hilton Head, SC for the week of May 10 (the week immediately after the final exam day). It'll be around $200 and that'll cover most meals and transport and housing. It'll be awesome, just speak to anyone who's gone before and they will explode with happiness in re-telling their tale of joy. It's a great way to get away from the usual insanity of beach week for a good cause, and we always have good time. So if you're interested even in the littlest bit, shoot me an e-mail. So in conclusion, build houses this beach week, not rap sheets."

For Spring Break 2008, under the leadership of Alyson Welsh '09, UVA Habitat took 25 students to Jacksonville, Florida to spend the week building and generally helping all they can. Highlights of the trip included an Iron Chef competition and having the opportunity to work with some really amazing AmeriCorps volunteers.

In 2007, the Spring Break trip went to two Habitat Affiliates in Charleston, SC with 34 amazing students including a grad student, someone from the University of Pennsylvania, and a marvelous George Washington Grad. Later for Beach Week, many of the same students made the long journey to Foley Beach, Alabama where they built and volunteered at the Habitat Restore in Baldwin County.

Thanks to John and Renee Grisham the UVA chapter of Habitat for Humanity took a group of 20 to 25 students to help hurricane Katrina victims in Biloxi, Mississippi in March 2006. The trip was during the University's spring break - March 4th-12th. This trip was acting in place of the normal Collegiate Challenge trip, which Habitat has done for over 7 years.
