A major objective of the IFC is to maintain the esteemed reputation of fraternity men in the community. Two important and very visible ways in which the IFC achieves this are through the work of the Vice President for Party Patrol and the Chairman for Housing and Physical Development.
A Unique Privilege
The Party Patrol is seen as a unique privilege to fraternity men at the University due to the tremendous responsibility it entails. The essential function of Party Patrol is to uphold the IFC Standards for Parties and Social Events at fraternity parties by enforcing age-verification procedures, noise levels, and shut-down times. Though the Party Patrol communicates regularly with the Charlottesville Police Department and the University Police Department, it is solely run by IFC fraternity men.
Fostering Community Relations
The Chairman for Housing and Physical Development has the responsibility of maintaining the fraternity properties, as well as upholding the outstanding relationship with the surrounding community. One fundamental duty of this position is to make sure there are no visible traces of fraternity social functions following the events. For the Chairman, this involves checking individual houses each weekend morning, as well as organizing roadside cleanups every week. In addition to these duties, the Chairman works closely with the local neighborhood associations to address mutual concerns and to maintain strong ties with the community.
The IFC has the responsibility of coordinating the efforts of various chapters for the benefit of the community as a whole. While the Party Patrol is in place to protect individuals in attendance at parties, the Chairman for Housing and Physical Development helps maintain the standing of fraternity men in the community. The collaborative efforts of these positions continue to make the fraternity system at the University of Virginia the most distinguished of its kind.
