UVa Tours

Tours of the Grounds of the University of Virginia are conducted by the University Guide Service and allow delegates and faculty advisors alike an opportunity to explore the beautiful Grounds of the University. Groups are given a chance to experience a dual historical/admissions tour, taking in the history of Mr. Jefferson's academical village while receiving information valuable to prospective applicants to the University.

Monticello Tours

In order to take advantage of our location, schools are encouraged to visit Monticello, the home of the founder of the University of Virginia and our nation's third president, Thomas Jefferson. Monticello is the only home in America on the World Heritage List of the United Nations and a not-to-be missed attraction for visitors to Charlottesville. For help with tours, contact the Undersecretary General for Business and Public Relations. Or you can visit the Monticello website at www.monticello.org.

Training Workshops

In the past, students and sponsors have expressed an interest in delegate training at VAMUN. As a result, VAMUN staff will prepare workshops for novice and experienced delegates to help them make the most of their model UN simulation weekend. By holding two separate sets of workshops, VAMUN training sessions can more effectively target the needs of individual delegates. Novice workshops prepare the new model UN delegate for parliamentary procedure and resolution writing, while experienced workshops are meant to hone the debating and negotiating skills of an expert model UN delegate.

Library Research

The University of Virginia Alderman Library have graciously allowed students the use of their facilities for research purposes. Several alcoves of the Government Documents section will be set aside for use strictly by VAMUN attendees. Additionally, optional tours of the library are available to help familiarize students with the resources of the library.

Faculty Advisor Events

VAMUN is well in tuned to the needs of faculty advisors and chaperones who accompany delegates to VAMUN, and as such, we offer activities and facilities for the adults of each delegation. A faculty advisor reception will take place Friday night as a chance for faculty advisors to meet one another, as well as greet the VAMUN Secretariat and committee chairs. A sponsors' lounge will also be hosted in a central location, with food and coffee for faculty advisors and chaperones, as well as to serve as a meeting place for Secretariat and faculty advisors.

Speakers Series

Taking advantage of our University setting, VAMUN invites professors of the University to come give guest lectures in their fields of expertise for relevant committees. Faculty advisors and chaperones are invited to sit in and listen as well, as these speakers series give an opportunity for students to interact with noted experts in the fields of politics and international relations and history, as well as making the focus of VAMUN an educational, not a competitive, experience. Last year unfortunately we were unable to provide these speakers due to a scheduling conflict, but this year we hope to be able to provide this excellent program again.

Delegate Dance

On Saturday night, VAMUN will host a special event for delegates to relax and meet their fellow students and staffers in an informal, relaxed setting. Held in University facilities, the delegate dance will be a chance for students to celebrate after a weekend of very intense debate, as well as an opportunity to meet their committee staff in a casual setting.

Accommodations and Security

VAMUN has arranged for hotel rooms to be reserved at several hotels within an easy walking distance of the University. VAMUN staff provides security in three hotels designated as official conference hotels, patrolling the halls after curfew. The security of our delegates is very important to us, and we offer security at the delegate dance as well, in addition to student escorts walking delegates to and back from hotels.

International Relations Organization

VAMUN is hosted by the University's own International Relations Organization, a student-run group dedicated to promoting international affairs in the University and Charlottesville communities. In addition to VAMUN, IRO also hosts VICS, a college-level simulation conference. Additionally, the Wilson Journal of International Affairs is an IRO-created research journal, featuring undergraduate research in the field of politics. VAMUN is staffed entirely by members of IRO, and students will have plenty of opportunities to meet and interact with the college students of IRO throughout the weekend.
