Some say Chivalry is dead, but we live it every day. Join us to discover how our ancestors lived in earlier times as we build, dance, feast, fight, and strive to be Lords and Ladies, the nobility of our Society. And we have a great time doing it! Join us!

If anything about knights, cavaliers, vikings, kings and queens, lords and ladies interests you, then the SCA is the place for you. Someone in our Society studies and practices almost anything you can imagine people doing in the middle ages. You can experience medieval life, not just study it:

An Overview of Students for Creative Anachronism

Don't Just Study the Past-Live It!

The central theme of the SCA is that we are a participatory group. When we want to understand how people fought in medival wars, we put on our armor. When we want insight into the courts of kings and queens, we dance and feast. We show what we have learned to each other and to the public.

The SCA's members are volunteers. No one gets paid for teaching new people-meeting and teaching new people is a big part of the fun!

Above and beyond the crafts and arts we practice, the members of the Society strive to create an atmosphere of nobility and gentility in dealing with each other. We value chivalry and courtesy, and expect each of our members to behave as good and noble folk. Thus our organization is more than a hobby, more than people simply making things the way medieval folk do. Our Society is an ongoing attempt to make just that: a society of nobility that is open to everyone.

Getting Started in the SCA

SCA Holiday Shopping Suggestions for Your Non-SCA Friends

I doubt any SCA member has trouble figuring out either what to ask for or what to get their friends and relatives who are in the SCA. But what do you tell your dubious grandmother about your hobby? Is she really going to go shop at Revival or Mad Matt's Armory online for you? Will Uncle Irving understand you want the 11th century viking buckles, not a Minnesota Vikings belt buckle?

Here are some things you can suggest to your non-SCA gift givers. You don't even need to explain why you need them!

All the stuff below would be particularly welcome to someone just getting started putting their fighting kit together.

As We Were Saying: Thursday Practice Changes and More

Now that the little matter of the election is over, life, and medieval life goes on. With Eastern Standard Time reestablished, we now move the Isenfir/UVa practice to the lower level of the Scott Stadium parking garage. Better light, protection from some of the weather, easy parking. What that location does not have is good positioning for recruitment. People don't casually walk by and discover us there. So please, tell your friends, and be sure to come yourselves!

Looking to print and hang some recruiting posters around your dorm or on grounds? Here are some options. Please don't post these in unauthorized places!

Great Demo Yesterday

Yesterday's demo at the Triangle was one of the best I've attended. Sure we could have had more combatants (where were you guys?) but we had enough, and the crowds were constant without being overwhelming. I don't recall a more receptive crowd ever. It seemed like a very large number of the spectators were actually there on purpose, to see what the SCA is. Good work Charles on getting the word out to this year's student mailing list. And while plenty of students came out and many stayed for almost the whole time, there were lots of townspeople too. And very interestingly, I noticed that several different times, new people who had not arrived together ended up chatting with each other, sometimes for quite a while. And that is a really great sign, since that means the new people will connect with each other and not just the established members. My camera went around, lots of people took pics. I'll post them tomorrow, since I left the camera at home today. Thanks to everyone who came out and helped.

Dance & Dessert Revel Pics

Everyone had a great time at the dance revel this Wednesday. Nice turnout, good people and lots of dancing.

Fall Activity Schedule

In addition to the items on the Shire Calendar , we hold a weekly food and movie gathering on Thursday nights. After fighter practice (around 7:30 or 8 pm depending on attendance and enthusiasm) we get dinner from The Castle in the dorm right next to the field then go to Olsson Hall to watch a movie (~8:30). This is a great way to meet us socially, chat about our interests, and watch some good movies.

Upcoming event dates & times

  • Our regularly scheduled fight practice and movie night is Thursday at the Dells. In bad weather, we meet at the lower level of the Stadium parking garage.
  • Sewing days on September 9th from 1-4(ish)pm in New Cabell Hall room 335 and September 16th from 1-4 in the Students Activities building. We will have everything you need to get started on garb including fabric and expert assistance.

Recruiting Time!

With the start of first year orientations, we have many chances for recruiting. Ask Corby for some of the new posters and brochures, talk to your new friends, come by a practice! Check out the new Downloads page for resources.

Dance in Town

The Shire of Isenfir also holds Renaissance dance practices on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month in room 123 of New Cabell Hall from 7 to 10 pm. No experience or partner is required. You may wear garb, but it is also not required.

Tuesday Night Practice in Richmond

Every Tuesday the nearby Barony of Caer Mear holds an indoor heavy weapons and rapier practice. Several local fighters drive there sometimes, and rides are available.

For other weekly goings on, see the calendar.

Upcoming Weekend Events

Every month, the StudentsCA tries to attend at least one SCA event. More information about the following activities will be sent out on our mailing list.

All year long, local members of the group travel all over the eastern seaboard to exciting SCA events. Talk to us about coming along!

Rides are usually available to any of these off-grounds events.
