Purpose: The Jefferson Society Undergraduate Research Scholarship funds one exceptional undergraduate to complete a project in one (or a combination of more than one) of Mr. Jefferson’s primary interests: political philosophy, world affairs, and architecture. This year, the second annual award will be granted on a competitive basis to a current first, second, or third-year student. Applications will be evaluated by seven distinguished faculty members who specialize in one of the three areas. Applicants must be fulltime undergraduates at UVa and must remain enrolled at the University through the completion of their project. Award amount: to be determined, up to $1500.
Faculty Support: Students are urged to work with a faculty advisor in the relevant field(s) or research. The faculty sponsor will write a letter in support of the student's proposal. The faculty sponsor of the scholarship winner will write and submit a brief assessment of the student's project upon its completion. We hope that the sponsor will also attend the student’s presentation to the Jefferson Society.
Final Product: In the course of carrying out a research project, an awardee will be expected to create a bibliography of relevant background materials, read and research the topic, establish contacts with professionals in the field, produce a final product (e.g. final paper, creative project, presentation) that summarizes his or her findings. Final projects must be submitted to the Center for Undergraduate Excellence and the Jefferson Society Public Services Committee no later than March 2007 along with a brief report from the student accounting for expenditure of award funds. Students are expected to present their projects at a Jefferson Society meeting and are urged to submit their project to the Oculus or another relevant research journal.
Applying: Current first, second and third-year undergraduate students who wish to apply for the Jefferson Society Undergraduate Research Scholarship must submit seven copies of the following materials:
- Application form
- A clear, concise description (one page maximum) of the proposed research project. The applicant should explain what is to be done, where the research will be carried out, and what will be the final product. A schedule for project implementation should be included. The applicant also should indicate what impact the research project will have on his or her intellectual development and how the project relates to any ongoing research program the student has (such as a Distinguished Majors thesis).
- Undergraduate transcript
- A letter of support from the student’s faculty sponsor. The sponsor should explain the basis for concluding that the student is capable of completing the project at a high level of quality.
