The UJC is charged with the mission of preserving and promoting a community of respect, safety, and freedom at the University of Virginia. Every student plays an important role in the Judicial System at UVA. It is important to note that the UJC and the Honor Committee are completely separate entities. While the Honor Committee deals strictly with lying, cheating, and stealing and has the single sanction of expulsion, the UJC hears all cases involving violations of the University Standards of Conduct , and can impose any sanction ranging from oral admonition to removal from the University. Potential Complainants Anyone, including students, may file a complaint against another student if he or she feels that a violation of the Standards of Conduct has occurred. Please click on the "For Complainants" link above for more information. Accused Students Students accused of violations of the Standards of Conduct are assigned a counselor to represent him or her throughout the judicial process. Please click on the "For Accused Students " link above for more information. Student Involvement in the Committee Students have a central role in the operation of the UJC. Twenty-one student representatives are elected each spring, two from each school of the University. The College of Arts and Sciences elects three representatives. These representatives serve as judges during trials and develop the process and procedures of the Committee. Support officer positions of the Committee are filled by students as well. These support officers are charged with key functions of the Committee and serve as counselors, investigators, and educators. Support officers are selected by the Committee every fall. For more information, please contact the UJC. |
