Barry Cushman, Moderator

Barry Cushman returned to Virginia in 1998 from the faculty of the St. Louis University School of Law, where he received the Thompson Coburn Faculty Scholarship Award and was twice voted Student Bar Association Teacher of the Year. Before entering law teaching he clerked for Judge Richard F. Neely of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals and practiced law with Riordan & McKinzie in Los Angeles. In 1990-91 he was the Samuel I. Golieb Fellow in Legal History at New York University School of Law. His book, Rethinking the New Deal Court: The Structure of a Constitutional Revolution (Oxford University Press), was awarded the American Historical Association's 1998 Littleton-Griswold Prize in American Law and Society. In 2003 he was honored with the University of VirginiaŐs All-University Teaching Award. Mr. Cushman is director of the Law School's Program on Legal and Constitutional History and the Joint Degree Program in Legal History, and currently serves on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the American Society for Legal History. He teaches courses in American legal history, constitutional law, and trusts and estates.

Melissa Arbus
Judge Diana Motz, Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals
Justice John Paul Stevens, U.S. Supreme Court
Melissa Arbus is a 2003 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law and is currently a clerk for Judge Diana Gribbon Motz, United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Ms. Arbus will also clerk for Justice John Paul Stevens, United States Supreme Court, in the 2004-2005 term. In law school, Ms. Arbus served as Notes Development Editor for the Virginia Law Review, and earned the Law School Alumni Association Award for Academic Excellence, which honors to the graduate with the highest cumulative grade point average; the Robert E. Goldsten Award for Distinction in the Classroom, for the graduate who contributed the most to classroom education by outstanding recitation and discussion; the Jackson Walker Award, for the second-year student with the highest grade point average; the Dr. Carl M. Franklin Prize, for the first year student with the highest grade point average; and was a member of the Raven Society, the University of Virginia Honor Society. Ms. Arbus graduated summa cum laude from Tufts University with a B.A. in Psychology and Political Science.

Emily Hanks
Judge Jeffrey Miller, Southern District of California
Emily Hanks is a 2003 graduate of the University of Virginia and is currently a clerk for Judge Jeffrey T. Miller, United States District Court for the Southern District of California. In law school, Ms. Hanks served as Articles Editor for the Virginia Law Review, and was selected to Order of the Coif. In addition, Ms. Hanks worked with the Department of Justice, Criminal Division, and United States AttorneyŐs Office, Criminal Division, for the Southern District of California. Ms. Hanks graduated with high distinction from University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in History.

Trey Sibley
Judge Robert Payne, Eastern District of Virginia
Judge Karen Williams, Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals
Trey Sibley is a 2002 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law and currently is a law clerk for Judge Karen J. Williams, United States Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit. Mr. Sibley earned a bachelorŐs degree in political science from Duke University in 1995. During his time at Duke, Mr. Sibley was a midshipman in the Duke Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps and, upon graduation from Duke, earned a commission as an officer in the United States Navy. Mr. Sibley served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the Navy from 1995 to 1999, during which time he made deployments to the Persian Gulf onboard USS SHILOH (CG 67) and to the Mediterranean Sea onboard USS DEYO (DD 989). While at the law school, Mr. Sibley served as Managing Editor of the Virginia Law Review and was selected to the Order of the Coif. Prior to taking his current position with Judge Williams, Mr. Sibley was a law clerk for Judge Robert E. Payne, United States District Court, Eastern District of Virginia.
