Bridging the Gap
Training & Responsibilities

Training

A volunteer in this program must attend an orientation session and an interview before being matched. He or she must then attend required training sessions before being allowed to participate in the program.

If you are willing to make this commitment, you will be given the chance to change the life of a child directly. You will discover a friendship not only with mentee(s), but with the members of your support group as well. You will become an important member of a team dedicated to helping refugee children develop to their fullest potential.

Responsibilities

What will the volunteer do?

The volunteer serves primarily as a friend, role model, and tutor to a young refugee child from Charlottesville or Albemarle County. Some of our volunteers also take their kids to soccer practice and games. The program demands a great deal of responsibility, independence, and initiative from the student volunteer.

When?

This is a year long commitment (fall & spring semesters). Volunteers are expected to meet every week with his or her mentee(s) for 3 hours but the day and time can vary. Many volunteers are paired with other volunteers to mentor/tutor a few kids within a family. The age range of the children ranges from preschool to middle school.
