NO FOREIGN LANGUAGE SKILLS OR TRAINING ARE NECESSARY!
As long as you speak English, you're all set!
Mission Statement
English as a Second Language is a program that puts UVA students out into the Charlottesville community to help adults, teenagers, and children learn to speak, read, and write English. Through our different sites, we volunteer by assisting teachers within an ESL classroom and through individual and group tutoring. You do not need to speak any other languages, or have training in how to teach English! We give you all the training you need.
Why ESL?
ESL truly brings the world to your fingertips by allowing you to interact with a diverse group of people, who come to the US from all around the world- everywhere from Afghanistan, to Brazil, to Nepal, to Honduras, to China! Helping others learn English allows them to get jobs, pursue further education, have a better life, and contribute more to the Charlottesville community! Over time, you will be able to see results- your students will begin to communicate better in English. Finally, ESL is FUN! Our volunteers have a great time, can't wait to come back each week, and build real relationships with the students in their classes.
