Migrant Aid
Frequently Asked Questions
What is my role as a volunteer?

Your job description as a volunteer is to improve your student's English and studying skills through helping with their homework, reading and writing activities, playing games, and speaking. With adult students, your goal is to help with basic English or other learning goals, such as the GED or the citizenship test.

How will I be in touch with my PD?

You will see and talk with your PD each week on the day you tutor. You will arrive at Madison House to pick up your child's backpack, check in with your PD, report on how the tutoring is going, and then leave to tutor. You will also be hearing from your PD through periodic Migrant Aid emails and telephone calls.

Will I be in a carpool?

Yes, your carpool will be meeting up with you at Madison House on the afternoon or evening you are tutoring. Make sure you have everyone there in the carpool before leaving Madison House!

Who should I contact if I have a question?

You can always contact your PD or contact person if you have any questions, concerns, or misunderstandings. You can get in touch with them via email or telephone. The contact information for all the PDs and contact people is on the first inside page of your training manual and on the Migrant Aid website.

Why should I use my contact person?

Your contact person is a very valuable resource. He/she has extensive experience working with migrants and migrant education, and will be able to provide you with anything: more effective techniques for tutoring, advice for dealing with cultural differences, as well as a deep and insightful community perspective of migrant education.

What if I can't make it to tutor one night?

Attendance is mandatory, with the exception of extreme circumstances (i.e. serious illness or a death in the family). If you are absolutely unable to attend tutoring one night, you should contact your PD as soon as possible. You can also arrange to switch with another volunteer from a different night, which requires approval from your PD.

**Make sure you write down your PD & Contact person’s name at TRAINING!!**
