-
The 1998 UVA Intramural Tournament-Sept. 25,1998
-
The Fred Sanford Memorial Trash Tournament- 26 September
1998
-
Maryland-Baltimore County's BCBC 3- 17 October 1998 A team of
Anthony Airne, Hight, and Shawn Pickrell competed as "The G. Gordon Liddy
Institute", finishing 4th in a 7-team field, but making the championship
playoff rounds with a 4-2 round robin record. Hight competed as G. Gordon
Liddy and took home all-star honors as the team's high scorer.
-
Georgetown's John Wilkes Booth 2: Super Mega-Ultra Trash- 25 October
1998 "Going Postal", which consisted of Matt Brady, Brian Hight,
and Alex Richman, finished 3rd in an 8-team field with a 5-3 mark after
starting the tournament at 4-0.
-
1998
Terrapin Invitational- 31 October 1998 A team of Katie Bowers, Chris
Lee, Minh Nguyen, and Matt Schiffler finished 0-12 for last place in the
tournament, but they, a second-year and three first-years, should be commended:
they had guts to compete.
-
1998 TRASH Mid-Atlantic Regionals at Georgetown-
8 November 1998 "This is Sports Center", featuring Steve Gray, Brian
Hight, and Alex Richman, won the tournament with a 10-1 record, defeating
PennAtrators in the final game to take home the championship and a bunch
of swag courtesey of Exxon, although for my money, any trip to Georgetown
is reason enough to enjoy a tournament.
-
1998 NAQT Mid-Atlantic Conference Tournament at
George Washington- 14 November 1998 The University of Virginia
seemed to have a weakened squad when they drove onto the campus of George
Washington University on the morning of November 14, 1998. A team
that was already considered to be in a rebuilding year was considered by
some as being even further weakened by the absence of long-time science
specialist Anthony Airne and the "retired" Brian Rostron due to thier desire
to attend the UVA-UNC football game. However, the intrepid group
that said no to football proved all doubters wrong with a dramatic 2nd-place
showing. And so, when the season highlights are played out, remember what
may be Virginia's finest hour, when Katie Bowers, Matt Brady, John Kenney,
Rachelle Lasken, and Alex Richman played at a level that was "better than
their supposed best."
Spring 1999
-
Juan Carlos Viscarra at
George Washington University - 23 January 1999 We sent 2 teams,
with the A team of Anthony Airne, Brian Hight, John Kenney, and Rachelle
Lasken finishing 6th with an 8-4 record, although we did beat the eventual
champions (Maryland Your Team Name Sucks). The B team of Katie, Minh, and
Alex was 1-11, with their only victory coming against the GW house team.
-
NAQT Regionals at UMBC - 13
February 1999 We sent 2 Division 1 teams and a Division 2 team.
The A team (Anthony, Steve Gray, Brian Hight, and John) finished 2nd with
a 10-2 record, losing only to Maryland A (once again in the championsip
playoffs) and to George Washington. The B team (Katie, Alex, and Matt Schiffler)
was 4-8, finishing somewhere around 8th, and the C team (Matt Brady, Rachelle,
and Minh) was 2-10, but by virtue of beating the only other Division 2
team, won the Division 2 championship. John narrowly won the overall scoring
championship and Matt and Minh placed 1/2 in the Divison 2 scoring race.
-
ACF
Regionals at College Park - 27 February 1999 A team of Katie Bowers,
Matt Brady, Brian Hight and John Kenney finished double round-robin play
with a 9-3 record, splitting with Maryland, the Old Guys master's team
(Anthony Airne, Clay Davenport, Adam Fine, and Brian Rostron), and George
Washington. Due to the ineligibilty of the Old Guys to win the title (they
were tied for 1st with Maryland at 10-2), we had the privilege of getting
schwacked by the Terps in the final yet again (yet again, we would have
had to win 2 games, but we couldn't win the first match).
-
NAQT Nationals at Ann Arbor, MI
(9-10 April 1999)- We sent a Division 1 team of Anthony, Alex, John,
and Brian Hight and a Division 2 team of Katie and Matt Brady. The
Division 1 team finished 10th overall with wins Friday night over Wisconsin,
Virginia Tech B, Quincy, and Penn and Fri. night losses to Chicago A and
Michigan B. On Saturday morning, we beat Wichita State, Florida, and Cal
Tech, while losing to Texas (Austin) and Iowa during powermatching. The
7-4 record and a high point total gave us a 13th seed, which we converted
to a 10th thanks to an undefeated session of ladder play, as we took out
Swarthmore, Maryland B, Iowa, and The George Washington University in that
order. The B team showed remarkable strength, despite low numbers,
with wins against the Univeristy of Minnesota and Carnegie Mellon B.
Katie and Matt finished 13th in a 15 team field.
