WELCOME
Established by Student Council in 1972, Student Legal Services provides low-cost, confidential legal assistance to University of Virginia students. We provide legal help on a wide variety of legal matters, including representation in Charlottesville/Albemarle area courts. No fee is charged for consultations. All fees are minimal.


ELIGIBILITY
The office is funded through the Student Activity Fee Fund and client fees. Only University of Virginia students who have paid the student activity fee, or partial fee University of Virginia students in degree granting programs who have not paid the student activity fee but who pay a $10 initial consultation fee, are eligible for legal services.


HOW TO USE THE SERVICE
Students who wish to consult Student Legal Services usually call the office and make an appointment. We strongly recommend that you contact us as soon as a problem arises, by calling 924-7524. E-mail is not confidential, and should not be used to transmit confidential communications. For your protection, please do not contact Student Legal Services via e-mail.

Student Legal Services can help with legal matters in many areas, for example: consumer, contracts, crime victim, criminal charges, debt collection, no-fault divorce, employment, expungement of criminal charges, insurance, landlord/tenant, name change, student non-profit organizations, traffic violations, and wills.

In other areas of law, please consult with us, as we can often refer you to competent outside attorneys.

Student Legal Services cannot help with certain legal matters including: matters involving the University of Virginia, the Commonwealth of Virginia, conflicts between or among University of Virginia students, out of area court representation, entrepreneurship, tax, immigration, copyright, trademark and patent.


INTERNS AND CLERKS
Volunteer undergraduate interns and clerks work under the supervision of an attorney. Applications are available for interested second and third year students after spring break every year at the Student Legal Services Office in Newcomb Hall room 460.


CONFIDENTIALITY
Student Legal Services is subject to the Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct, including Rule 1.6 regarding confidentiality of information. You should feel free to discuss with us all aspects of your legal matter.
