The Swing Club at UVa is a group of students who enjoy social swing
dancing and who are helping to improve our dance community by
learning, teaching, and preserving several styles swing dance and
swing music. Our club has four main activities:
- Dances: We hold swing dances at UVa approximately once a
month. These dances are free to all swing club members, and is open
to all UVa students and the community at large. We provide a
beginner's lesson at the the start of each UVa dance. Most dances
will be held in either Newcomb Ballroom, on the 3rd floor of Newcomb
Hall, or at the Forum @ O-Hill, in back of the O-Hill Dining
Facility.
- Lessons: We hold weekly meetings where swing lessons are
taught by student instructors. All levels are welcome, from beginner
to advanced. We cover a variety of swing styles including East Cost,
Balboa, Charleston, Lindy Hop, and Blues. Lessons will be held in one
of the athletic facilities. NOTE: Lessons are only open to club
members.
- Trips: We distribute information and organize carpools to
nearby swing events. There are dances almost every weekend throughout
the school year in Charlottesville, Richmond, VA Beach, Blacksburg
(VT), Williamsburg (W&M), Harrisonburg (JMU), Washington D.C., etc.
