Local History: the ΔΧ Chapter
UVA's chapter of Tri Sigma, Delta Chi, began in January 1981. Hoping to associate with Sigma Sigma Sigma, Christine Radcliffe, Kelly Saunders and eight other friends formed the Sigma Sigma Club. With the Alpha Chapter in close vicinity to UVA, the founding members soon felt connected with the sorority's colors, purple and white, jewel, the pearl, and flower, the violet. The ten women held their first meeting in Cambridge Square Apartments.
Discussing what they wanted out of their sorority, the members decided Tri Sigma was not to be solely a social club, but a place where one could develop personally and maintain her identity. Even though each woman was a strong individual, they worked together for a single purpose: to become a Tri Sigma chapter. In the following year, due to the persistence and hard work of these ten women, the Sigma Sigma Club became the Delta Chi Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma. From its humble beginnings, Christine and the others felt a strong pride watching the new chapter become a fully established sisterhood.
Today, Delta Chi has over 100 members. Although our chapter is much larger now, we still maintain the original goal of the sorority. Working and socializing together, we each exhibit individuality, making Delta Chi a diverse and exciting sorority.
