If you have any questions about the UGS try-out process, please contact the Spring 2010 Probie Chair Sally Carlson (shc7v@virginia.edu)

So you want to be a Uguide? Excellent. Whether you're a first semester first year or a second semester third year, we encourage you to try-out to become a member of UGS. Please use the menu at right to navigate information about UGS member requirements, as well as the UGS tryout procedure.

Guide Service members enjoy their privilege as keepers of U.Va. history, and actively pursue their roles as ambassadors of U.Va. to prospective students. But being a member of UGS is about more than giving tours. Being a member of UGS means you'll also enjoy:

  • LASE 152: History of Mr. Jefferson's University: This seminar, open to all students, explores the history and traditions of the University, and offers guides the opportunity to serve as facilitators for a credit.
  • Community Outreach: Throughout the year, Guides work to connect with a broad range of University organizations and the Charlottesville community. Highlights include holding Candlelight Tours in the fall, as well as offering several special interest tours, such as History of African-Americans at UVa tours and History of Women at UVa tours.
  • Intramural Sports: Each semester, UGS takes on the world in such wide ranging sports as co-rec basketball or intertube water polo. On any given day, expect to see guides out on the Lawn playing Fatbat or Ultimate.
  • "Rolls": The Guide Service rolls many times throughout the year to local historical sites, such as Monticello, and also makes trips to a ski resort, Carter's Mountain for apple picking, Foxfield, etc.
  • Colonnade and Restoration Balls: These charity balls, held in the fall and spring respectively, are formal balls open to the entire University community and sponsored by the University Guide Service.
  • Just for Fun: Guide Service members are experts at bonding with each other and dancing the night away. From the Tacky Tourist Party to Probie Play Day, a UGS year is packed full of opportunities to hang out and have fun. Any guide will tell you their UGS friendships and memories will last a lifetime.
