What's the difference between club ultimate frisbee and intramual ultimate frisbee?
Club ultimate frisbee is year-round, while IM ultimate frisbee is offered in the Fall for about a month. The major difference, though, is that IM ultimate is played against other UVa teams; the club ultimate teams travel as far south as Georgia and as far north as Pennsylvania for tournaments against other schools.
How often does the team travel?
We go to about 6 or 7 tournaments a semester, more in the spring than in the fall because the college ultimate season starts then. Below is the team at the Wolfpack Invitational in Raleigh, NC in 2004.
Do you guys practice?
Because we play competitively against other schools, having a team in good physical condition that knows the game and knows how to work together is imperative. See the Schedule page for more information on practices.
What if I miss a practice or have a class during practice?
It is expected that players attend practice. That said, if you can't make it one day just let the captain know and then go do whatever you need to do. If you've got a class, that's trickier. If you can't find a way to take it some other time (or some other semester, when it might be offered in a different slot), then I guess there's not much to be done. You'll just have to switch majors.
If I'm bad do I still get playing time?
Yes. Hardly anyone played ultimate in high school, so we don't expect incoming players to know anything. If you're willing to come to practice and try, we'll turn you into the smarmy, ultimate-playing machine you were meant to be. At the major tournaments, the 'cruits get a certain amount of playing time but they also get to watch the game and learn how it works (this is more important than you'd think; ultimate doesn't make it on ESPN....yet). However, we also go to a number of smaller tournaments which are ideal for (and vital to) teaching new players.
I'm unsure if I want to commit. What if I don't have time?
Many team members are involved in many other things: the Greek system, Jefferson Society, theatre, student governance, etc. And many of us are also committed to our academics, but there's always time for ultimate and the team social events. Come out to practices and the first tournament, and when you see that you aren't flunking out you'll appreciate how much fun you're having.
I'm hooked. What do I do now?
Browse through the links page to learn more about the game, its history and its culture. Then find us at the fall activities fair in the Amphitheatre on the Tuesday before classes start. If you can't make it there, email one of the captains about joining (links on the Contact page). The best time to join the team is in the fall, because we start teaching the basics at the first practice. If you find this page midway through the semester, though, we encourage you to come out anyway.
