What is ultimate frisbee?
Ultimate frisbee is a fast-paced sport that combines athleticism, skilled throws, and field sense. It's been around for 30 some-odd years, and is probably a lot more organized and a lot more widespread than you think.
What is the difference between club ultimate frisbee and intramual ultimate frisbee?
Club ultimate frisbee is year-round, while IM ultimate frisbee is only offered for about a month. (This year it's in the fall) The major difference, though, is that IM ultimate is played against other UVa teams; the club ultimate teams travel as far south as Georgia, as far north as Maryland, and as far west as Seattle, Washington for tournaments against other schools.
How often does the team travel?
We go to about 3-5 tournaments a semester, more in the spring than in the fall because the college ultimate season starts then.
Do you guys practice?
Because we play competitively against other schools, having a team that knows the game and knows how to work together is imperative. To start out the fall semester, practices for all players are Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30-6:00 pm, along with Sundays 4-6 pm. Later in the year an additional scrimmage on Wednesday evenings will be added. For current practice times, check out the practice page.
What if I miss a practice or have a class during practice?
It is expected that players attend practice. That said, if you can't make it one day just let a captain know and then go do whatever you need to. If you've got a class, that's trickier. If you can't find a way to take it some other time (or some other semester, when it might be offered in a different slot), then I guess there's not much to be done. You'll just have to switch majors. ;)
If I am bad do I still get to play?
Yes. Hardly anyone played ultimate in high school, so we don't expect incoming players to know anything. If you're willing to come to practice and try, we'll turn you into the ultimate-playing machine you were meant to be. If you come to practice regularly, you are ensured playing time during the tournaments.
Is there a coach?
The University prohibits club sports from spending the money allocated to us on a coach. The team captains act as the coach and they do a darn good job.
What is a regulation size disc?
Ultimate Frisbee uses a 175 gram disc. If you don't know the weight of your frisbee, but you know it isn't one of the small ones that you get as a freebie, you are probably okay.
