The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a non-profit professional organization whose purpose is to aid and promote women in engineering and encourage young women to consider pursuing an engineering education. The chapter at the University of Virginia has been dedicated to informing young women about the qualifications and achievements of women engineers and the opportunities open to them. It serves as a center of information on women in engineering and provides services to its members, including workshops and scholarships. In particular, the goals of the UVA SWE chapter are to help women pursuing a degree in engineering prepare for a successful career and to bring more young women into engineering. To accomplish these goals, SWE provides professional development programs to women enrolled in the engineering school and outreach programs to high school women. In addition, SWE is a support network for female engineering students. The UVA chapter of the Society of Women Engineers has over 70 members. These women benefit from SWE by participating in numerous professional, social, and service activities throughout the year. |
