The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a non-profit professional organization whose purpose is to aid and promote women in engineering and encourage young women to consider pursuing an engineering education. The student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia has been dedicated to informing young women about the qualifications and achievements of women engineers and the opportunities open to them. It serves as a center of information on women in engineering and provides services to its members, including workshops and scholarships. “Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency of the University. It is a separate and independent organization which is responsible for and manages its own activities and affairs. The University does not direct, supervise or control the organization and is not responsible for the organization’s contracts, acts or omissions."
