Alaina Brown, SMD08
"Lily"
I'm an almost 25 year old who has just recently become a 4th year (although I'm still accepting this). I'm from Northern VA, but went to college in Delaware (go Blue Hens). I plan to go into Pediatrics and hope to have time during internship to continue my hobbies: reading, water skiing, diving, and TV.
David Bumpass, SMD08
"Open Doors"
David is often found wandering the outdoors with camera in hand. Originally from California, he has had extended stays in South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia, a brief stint in Toronto, and a desire not to stay anwhere very long because there are too many places to see. He enjoys whitewater kayaking, ice hockey, and surgery.
Harmony E. Caton, SMD10
"Girlpower", "Psst", "Shy", "A Long 80 Kilometers"
Medical student, Peace Corps volunteer, diplomat, photographer, writer, crazy aunt, idealist, dreamer, perfectionist, intense gen-x slacker- perhaps my resume suffers from a personality disorder. More than once wanderlust has brought me to Africa, and with so many people in need my journeys are far from over. Ditsala tsame, ke tla go bona kgantele. Kele Kagiso.
Stephanie Chen, SMD10
"Descent of a soul", "Nightsong", "Three Trashcans"
Born in the Sandia foothills of New Mexico, Stephanie believes in the magic of neon signs, hot air balloons, bizarre bazaars, and yes, wacky alien museums. She looks forward to the day she will sally forth, MD in hand, to parts unknown, but for now, massive piles of reading eagerly await her attention.
Robert Chow, SMD10
"Garden of Versailles", "Arc de Triomphe", "New Life"
I saw the old examples of these bios and they seemed very strange. I thought, "Who talks in third person? They must be deranged." I was born in Missouri in the fall of eighty-two, just in time for my "The first Asian kid in town" debut. My fifty-five words are done, and it's been fun.
Jacqueline Dovgalyuk, SMD07
"Bird's Eye View", "The Way We Talk Now"
Future Emergency Medicine physician. Mother of three precious young boys. Constantly striving to find the balance between the two worlds. "Birds Eye View" was written after a helicopter ride-along over her childhood home with her husband and kids standing in the front yard. "The Way We Talk Now" was written on the residency interview trail.
Jim Edwards, SMD10
"Misty Path", "Sedona"
Jim is just a simple country boy exploring the world in his travels ranging from Alaska to England. He particularly agrees with Books Atkinson who understands that "the virtue of the camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse it gives him to keep on looking."
Chris Eller, SMD08
"Lençóis Maranhenses"
Chris grew up in the small town of Conowingo, Maryland, but has loved living in Charlottesville. After a few summers in Africa, he has spent the last year living near the beach in Fortaleza, Brazil doing global health research, and will soon return to Charlottesville and fourth year rotations… Chris enjoys soccer, running, and refereeing.
Tabor Flickinger, SMD07

"Fall Back Road"

"Defined", "Hugs"
Katie is the first to tell you she hails from the proud state of Texas. She's currently enjoying second year of her medical school adventure in Charlottesville, a mere two point five hours away from her fiancé, stationed in Norfolk. Katie enjoys writing immensely and is excited for the opportunity to share her creative expression.
Amy Holda Gueye, SMD10
"My Stranger", "Oath of Student Doctor"
Born in Senegal, I began to travel at 2 as the daughter of a diplomat. I have done three years of research in undergrad and I am interested in oncology. Writing helped me journey through an interesting life and helped me mold the statue of my life into forms I enjoy reshaping now and then.
Ross Hanchett, SMD07
"Candids"
Anh Ho, SMD09
"Retired", "Envy", "No Insurance"
College was fun. Photography is cool. But medical school is strangely amusing. Golf carts. Land Rovers. Trees. With the help of dark corners, he slept through many lectures. But what will become of him on the wards? Let's just hope that it's not worse than studying for the Boards. Never want to see that again.
Zahra M. Malik, SMD10
"Morning at the Marina" , "Two Men"
If medicine wasn't an option, Zahra would have gone into journalism. Born in Saudi Arabia, raised all over the states. Dabbled in creative writing and choir for seven years. Loves: traveling, ethnic food, long drives, short stories. No decisions on specialty right now ? just looking forward to the summer.
Jonathan Mason, SMD07
"Homecoming"
Raised in the Applachians of Southwest Virginia, Jonathan Mason graduated from the University of Virginia's College at Wise in 2002. When he is not training in his pediatrics residency, he plans to encompass his life around following Duke men's basketball, meditation sessions with his car, and mentoring his younger brother who is also studying medicine.
Stephanie B. Mikulsky, SMD07
"My Caduceus"
Less than a month to graduation and the start of the next chapter of my life...residency! I will be an intern at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. I learned to needlepoint from my mom who learned when she was in residency, her stress reliever. Hopefully, I will have time to continue the family tradition!
Lindsey Neal, SMD07
"Untitled Uterus", "Weaning"
I am loving being a fourth-year med student and mom, and I am simultaneously scared to death and terribly excited for the bittersweet impending doom of residency. I know though, that I/we will survive and persevere. I have loved the extra time to make prints, but for the next three years, it'll have to wait.
Tracey Owensby, SMD07
"The Cutter", "Wrapped in Comfort", "The Med Student's Case"
Too deep for some, too silly for others, frantic, calm, soulful; some creativity, a touch of selfishness, lots of heart; genuine, compassionate, impatient; cell-phone talker, roadrager, Jeopardy addict, coffee connoisseur; daughter, friend, dog lover, wisdom seeker; gregarious, fiercely independent, wistful, delicate, flexible. Home, The Bluegrass, birthin' babies, to love deeply, practice passionately, challenge the "right"!
Melissa Lanier Park, SMD10
"Cadaver Memorial"
Mick Ramos, SMD08
"On The Phone", "Procurement"
Mick is a rising 4th year and is pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine. She spent most of this past year keeping her head above water while surviving the perfect storm that is third year. Erik Ritch, SMD10
"Curator", "Jeffrey Pine"
Erik Ritch was born in western New York but has spent most of his life in the South. He is a child of God and enjoys the wilderness, photography, music, skiing, and mathematics. Shaziya Shaikh, SMD07
"Dragon", "Beluga Whale"
I've been in Charlottesville for the past 8 years (yes, I am a double-HOO) and am excited about moving to a city and beginning residency this summer at DC Children's Hospital. Photography and art have been interests of mine for a long time and I try to pursue these hobbies in my free time.
Peter Volsky, SMD09
"Medical School", "Abuelo", "Cacao", "Acerolas"
A thought-wanderer and frequent pen-pusher, for better or worse; mad lover of flavors and beats and things eliciting a visceral response; framer of [lit people, places, and the air between them] that catch eyes, supporting the belief in beauty; he dwells in abstraction and delights in moving about the world, but prefers to sleep mornings.
Laura White, SMD07
"Mr. Warren", "Next Time"
Inspired by bittersweet moments of human connection, humbled by the knowledge of her own limitations, and sustained by a handful of chocolate-covered espresso beans, Laura reflects on her fourth year of medical school and prays that amidst the craziness of her upcoming family medicine residency she will not neglect to listen to her patient's stories.
