HISTORY
The Virginia Rifle + Pistol Club has been in operation at the University of
Virginia for over 40 years. Over the years, the club has had two national
collegiate champion teams, nine national individual collegiate champions, and
14 individuals who have won a total of 25 All-American awards. For the most
part, the shooting events in which the club members compete are the same as
those contested in the summer Olympics, where the shooting events involve: 17
medal events, the third largest number of participants of any sport, and about
5% of the total Olympic
participants.
The shotgun program was started a few years ago when the range in the basement
of Maury closed down. We now shoot at Rivanna Rifle and
Pistol Range.

The pistol team usually competes in 2 or 3 matches in the fall, and 4 or 5 in
the spring, culminating in Sectionals in late February and Nationals in March.
The Collegiate Nationals this year will be held in Atlanta, on the Wolf Creek
Olympic Shooting Range.

|
The rifle team typically competes in 1 or 2 matches in the fall, and another 2
or 3 in the spring culminating in Sectionals in February. Rifle Sectionals this
spring will be held at VMI. As a club sport, the rifle team is not affiliated
with the NCAA (as other schools' varsity programs are), so the Sectional
results from across the country are compiled to determine Club
Champions.
The shotgun team typically competes 2 times each semester. We most often
shot against Woodberry Forest or Virginia Tech. We have also shot in regular
matches though and plan to compete more next year.

WHAT IF I'VE NEVER SHOT A GUN BEFORE?
To shoot with the VRPC, you need not have any equipment or previous
experience--we provide everything you need. The time commitment is as much as
you are willing to give--a number of members shoot only recreationally and do
not travel with the team, and they come and shoot every couple of weeks or so.
The shooters who travel with the team to our intercollegiate matches practice
anywhere from 3-10+ hours per week. Most collegiate shooters picked up the
sport while in college and thus the level of competition is such that if you
work seriously at it, in several months you can be competing at a national
level.

TO JOIN
Simply show up at one of our practices and try it out! We request that
prospective members arrive at the beginning of practice times to receive
orientation. Our general dues policy works as follows: You may shoot twice for
free, then after your third time you are expected to pay dues and thus become a
"dues paying member." Dues are $35 per semester, and this covers all of your
equipment, ammunition, targets, and range use, as well as most of your travel
expenses if you decide to travel with the team. We practice at the Rivanna
Rifle and Pistol Range, which is located approximately 5 miles south of town on
Old Lynchburg Rd. The rifle and pistol teams
practice twice a week on Mondays and Tuesdays at
7:00pm while the shotgun team practices on Tuesdays
and Fridays at 3:30pm.
