Community Vigil for Lawrence King
On Tuesday, February 12th, 2008, eighth-grader Lawrence King of Oxnard, California was fatally shot in the head in front of his classmates during
the early morning hours of school.
King was fifteen years old and an openly gay youth to his peers and family. Deeming this a hate crime, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and allied
communities across America have been holding vigils in an effort to bring communities together in making commitments to prevent this horrible tragedy
from being repeated elsewhere.
Since Lawrence King was murdered there have been several other attacks on and murders of members of the LGBT community across the country. Attention
to these incidents exemplifies the need for community involvement at all levels to create a society where violence is not tolerated and respectful
relationships are supported and modeled to all our young people. Please join us in this Vigil for Unity to first honor the life of Lawrence King, and
more importantly, to come together as a community to stop the violence and hatred plaguing our schools and communities in harmful and dangerous ways.
Other vigils across the state and nation will be happening concurrently.
When: Wednesday March 12th, 6:30-8:00pm
Where: UVA Amphitheater – across from Garrett Hall.

each of us, what kind of reactions certain descriptions/names inspire, and how we use or discard these concepts in our personal
views of spirituality. This is a deeply personal topic so please come with an open mind and a willingness to discuss real thoughts
and feelings about a complicated subject.

- We are also trying to interact with other religious groups on Grounds. I've talked with Interfaith Dialogue and here's the information they sent me:
"There are 4 meetings total this semester, the first of which is on Thursday, September 20th at 8:00 in Cabell 119. Each meeting will be slightly different, in that it will be more of a performance than a discussion. for those of you that came out to or participated in the "3 P: Poetry, Prose, and Performance" night last spring, the meetings will follow this model: there will be a professor speaker, students of various faiths reading poetry and prose aloud, and musical performances from an assortment of faith groups."
So far they have the Bhakti Yoga Group, the Hindu Student Group, the Baha'i music group, and several other speakers and performers. They would like for us to join them and do a reading or presentation. It would be a wonderful opportunity to explain about Unitarian Universalism to others on Grounds! So mark your calendars. We can talk about this at our next meeting.
Welcome!
We have a wonderful program lined up for this semester. We will be at the Activities Fair this Saturday, and our first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 5, in New Cabell 337 (CAB 337) from 7-8 pm. Please come and invite your friends!

This Sunday 19 February: Spirituality and Social Justice
(posted 12 February 2006 by
Benjamin)
How can we be justice-seeking when we have so many
different ideas of justice? What is the relationship between our spiritual lives and our social and political beliefs and actions? Are
certain social-justice actions simply not optional for the religious person? Can we take action together and remain in loving community with
one another? Join us as we explore these issues, and more, at
6:30 pm
on Sunday,
19 February
in 320 New Cabell Hall.
We will have guests from the current Living Wage Campaign, and, as usual,
food.
That morning, as usual, we'll also be going
together to the 11:15am Sunday service at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial
Church, Unitarian Universalist. If you want to join us, but need a ride, let me know.

Join us for our first meeting of the new semester! (posted 25 January 2006 by Benjamin)
The Virginia Unitarian Universalist Students will have their first meeting
of the new semester at 6:30 pm
on Sunday, 29
January in 426 New Cabell Hall. David Takahashi-Morris,
one of the church's ministers, will help lead the meeting,
and there will be food.
Newcomers are welcome and expected. Old VUUSers who've become involved in other
things are also encouraged to attend, since we're trying to get off to a fresh start, and this is your best chance to give your input and to
see what new things we'll be up to. If you have any questions, or can't make the meeting but
have ideas anyway, please contact Benjamin Van Dyne at ben@benvandyne.org. See you then!

Unitarian Universalist Principles & Purposes
(posted 18 January 2006 by Benjamin)
There's probably no better way to relaunch the VUUS website than with our
shared Unitarian Universalist principles. These aren't a creed that you have to believe to join us—we don't believe in those—but it's probably the
best single way to express our common understanding of what we're here for.
We convenant to affirm
and promote:
The inherent worth and dignity of every person.
Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations.
Acceptance of one another and encouragement to
spiritual growth.
A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
The right of conscience and the use of the
democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.
The goal of world community with peace, liberty,
and justice for all.
Respect for the interdependent web of existence of
which we are a part.

(posted 18 January 2006 by
Benjamin)
Here it
is, the newly updated and revised VUUS website. Even for those of you who are old VUUSers, look around, since there's new stuff to see. If
you find anything wrong, such as links that don't work, words that are misspelled, or facts that are simply wrong, please, please, please contact
Benjamin and let him know so that he can fix it. Thanks.
