The Society

The Washington Literary Society and Debating Union (simply, "The Wash") is an organization dedicated to the pursuit of literary culture and the art of oratory at the University of Virginia. One of the oldest such institutions in the nation, the Society has a rich history dating back to the early days of the University. Currently, weekly meetings consist of several literary presentations, a serious or humorous debate in the style of the American Parliamentary Debate Association, and an atmosphere of genial friendship. Meetings are held on Thursday nights at 8:00 PM in Jefferson Hall (Hotel C, West Range). More information regarding the activities of the Society can be obtained by contacting one of our officers or, better yet, attending one of our meetings to see the Wash for yourself.
