Each fall, the Washington Society engages the Jefferson society in two
debates, a humorous debate named the Harrison Cup, and a serious debate
on a question of ethics. Both debates are widely publicized and are
judged by some of UVa's finest professors and graduate students. Recent
resolutions include thought provoking questions about the ethics of
torture, and of helping poorer countries, as well as lightheated ones
such as "Resolved: Everything I need to know I learned in kindergarten"
This semester, the Washington Society is organizing the Smith Simpson Debate on Diplomacy on Monday, March 17th in the Rotunda Dome Room. The debate will feature two representatives from the Jefferson Society and two from the Washington Society debating a question about international relations; this year, the topic will be the current political situation in Pakistan. Three professors will judge the debate and choose the winning side.
