No one is exactly sure where it started, but "Flo the Flamingo" is the long standing mascot of the Virginia Women's Rugby Football Club.

Earliest lore has it that around the season of 1983, a certain rugger, Joyce Dudek, pilfered one of the lawn ornaments during a rugby road trip to Cape Fear. While this report has remained unsubstantiated to this day, we believe this to be the start of something wonderful.

Where ever the team goes, Flo is sure to be with her. If Flo is left behind in Charlottesville, HAVE NO FEAR! A backup Flo is only a trailer park or tacky neighborhood away! Heck- there's "Wal-Marts" everywhere! A Flo is always near!

But what IS IT about the lawn flamingo that is so near and dear to our hearts? What does this all mean?!

In a nutshell... as our team has gotten better, and developed into a very good and competitive team, Flo is that little"tongue in cheek" tacky item that reminds all of us: DON'T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY.

For the VWRFC, while winning is important (As Nancy says: "Winning beats losing by a mile"), the true reason we play is for our love of the sport, for the friendships developed, for the physical challenge, and for the feeling of "15 as 1" as we all work together to score.

We are nothing without our teammates. United we stand, divided we fall. 15 as 1.
